CPU and Graphic Card for CAD Stuff - Not Something Too Hectic

Hey guys,

my computer knowledge is pretty limited. I am thinking of building a computer just for some cad that i will use just at home. any recommendations. I am not after spending huge amounts of money just yet. Cheaper is better. Something decent.

TIA

  • What sort of CAD will you be doing? If it's AutoCAD for basic drafting honestly the bar is pretty low.. a new i3+ with integrated graphics is fine. If you're going civil design or 3D modelling then maybe you should spec higher.

    • I was going to use Catia or inventor for some assemblies.

  • The CAD subreddit is probably the place to go ask fellow CAD users and see what hardware is recommended
    https://www.reddit.com/r/cad/

the type of hardware you buy really depends on whether your software supports OpenGL or DirectX. There's a lot of debate on whether you need Quadro cards vs getting a high end RTX card but it ultimately rests on what API you end up using and how big your CAD assemblies are.

  • If you're on a budget

Could pick up a refurbished/ex designer cad workstation with a xeon processor and older generation quadro card and 16-32gb of ram for ~$400-500 depending on spec off ebay, gumtree or marketplace, i know these are forever coming up as offices turn over old workstations.

Else a refurbished i7 dell optiplex or HP elitedesk with a 1660ti small form factor will do the job (just make sure it has at least 16gb ram) for $200-$300.

Otherwise buy something new, techfast on here has decent ryzen builds something like this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/556101

  • Don’t worry about quadros unless you can get a good deal on a used workstation. Unless you are working with big complex 3D assemblies in your projects you are unlikely to notice anything wrong with a decentish gaming machine.

Depends on what kind of cad your are doing etc, but you can probably get by quite well with some cheap prebuilt 1060 system.
