Ok so i'm a current telstra post paid customer paying $60 per month 60GB
Went into JBHIFI and got the $199 deal for S20+ - $89 per month 150GB for 12 month contract. My understanding from the deal is that I can either buy the phone $199 - Go on the 12 month contract with a new Telstra phone number and then apply to cancel - the ETC being $594.
The alternative as I read from a user comment on the OZB deal - is to call up Telstra and ask to cancel old plan, keep the contract, keep existing number and just pay the extra $30 per month for the phone with alot more data.
The JB sales assistant told me to wait 1 month before canceling as this reflects on your credit history and it's considered fraud. Not sure where he got this infomation or if they are informed from checking their telstra portal that they have access too.
I spoke to telstra via chat and they can't transfer the old number to the new plan, they'll need to deactivate my old number if I wish to cancel the $60 deal.
Questions
- Will it affect my credit rating if I pay ETC right now after I've just signed the contract, what did you tell them when they ask why are you cancelling?
- If I port out my new number to an cheap optus prepaid sim, will this affect my credit rating and I'll be billed the ETC?
- Has anyone changed plans and kept their number onto a pre-existing contract?
Essentially I just want to keep my old number and I dont mind staying on the new contract or terminating the new contract (without credit file repercussions) and stay on the existing plan $60 per month and pay the ETC.
Any advice would be great.
I literally just got off the phone from Telstra. Finally i was able to talk to a person instead of using the stupid message service
They moved my old number (Telstra $45 p/m) onto the new contract and got rid off the new number.
Essentially my old number took over the contract.
So I paid $199 for the new phone and i am keeping the new contract with my old number on it. I will cancel the plan in a few months time by porting to a different service.
I really can't say if cancelling will effect your credit, but there is nothing stopping you from doing this and just paying the fee, plenty of people do it.
