Onboard Motherboard Wi-Fi Vs Wi-Fi Card Vs Wi-Fi USB

Hi everyone, provided ethernet isn't an option, I would like a suggestion which is is better when building a gaming desktop. Also, a suggestion for the part(link) if possible. thanks!

  • Try motherboard wifi.
If it is unacceptable, then buy a dedicated one like Hybroid mentioned.

  • Try built in first, if the signal sucks then get another one with extension antennas.

  • Generally speaking (certain models will perform better than others) you will want your Wi-Fi antennas higher up.

I had a PCI-E Wi-Fi card, TP-Link A9E card, but my case is now on the ground. Got a good USB wifi unit, on a cable that I could place higher on a shelf, and it performed better.

In saying that, I have had all three options at some point, and all performed good enough for gaming/streaming/etc.

I'd genberally stay away from the little self-contained USB units, crappy little antennas in them, and go something like this, https://www.umart.com.au/MSI-Herald-AX-Intel-AX200NGW-WiFi-6… , or similar.

    • Guess someone can't take a joke.

  • It’s not gaming desktop if it doesn’t have ethernet. Tell us why it isn’t an option and we’ll give you suggestions.

    • Making a gaming room in granny flat, router/access point for the internet is all the way in the front of the house, to pull LAN all the way back will be tricky, includes drilling hole somewhere or left a window open so the cable can go through and a long as cable. I know I could try buy a mesh wifi with backhaul, but that another scenario. so trying to figure what is the best way out of those 3.

      • Does your granny flat have its own electricity circuit? (Does it have its own electricity bill)
If it’s under the same electricity route as the main house, then you can definitely use Ethernet over Power.

        • thanks for the suggestion, will look into this. Its on the same elec bill, but not sure how it wired. My house quite old the wiring might run on ancient aluminium cables hahaha

That is something which I was fooled to buy into and trust me its not worth it. If you understand electricity circuit distribution then you would understand what this -

If the electric outputs are not on the same circuit i.e. both power outlets turn off from the same circuit breaker, its going to give you even worse performance than wifi. I have tried and tested this in my own house and its useless.

Now the OP has suggested they have gaming room in a granny which I assume would be on separate circuit, therefore this solution will not work.

  • I would go with built in wifi motherboard or motherboard like the b550 from ASRock that has m.2 wifi slots. I would consider this option if you are planning on vertically
    mounting your gpu.
