Driving Borrowed Car during Victoria Covid Lockdown

Hi everyone,

I am in possession of a friend's car as he is now overseas. My question is since this car is registered to my friend's address which is ~20km away (yes I got my hands on it before lockdown), can I drive this car to get groceries within 5km of my home? It is the only car I have right now.

If I get pulled over can I show the police my licence to proof this?

Thanks guys!

The cars registered address should be irrelevant. As long as you are within 5k of your home address, perhaps be prepared to be pulled over on occasion.. But you should contact your local authorities..

    • thanks for the advice I'm asking because the police may scan the plate and only see the registered address haha

They might pull you over for that reason but you are within 5ks so they won't fine you.

Apparently you can get pulled over and fined if you have those cover plates from dealers that are beyond your area. So if you have one of those, you should probably take those off unless the dealership place is near where you live.

          • @Zachary: I don't doubt the pulled over part, but I reckon the fined part is a rumour. Odds are some folks over 5ks from their house were pulled over because of the plates/registered address and got fined thanks to distance from their house.

Keep your ID with you that confirms where you live and you should be fine. They would pull you over in the first instance, and then you would explain the situation, show them where you live and you should have no issues.

    • thanks for the advice I don't want to take the bus to go buy foods haha

      • Bus should not be required!

I’m also using a car registered elsewhere, though the places I actually visit are also within the cars 5km radius.

      • r u like a bus driver or something?

There are still cars on the road with out of state licence plates. I imagine the police could be very busy if they decide to pull over all cars based on this to try and detect those who are not doing the right thing. Even if they did, you would be less than 5KM from home in any case.

    • yep the closest Woolies is 2.5 km away and it's true I have been seeing cars with interstate plate at Woolies parking

    • When your closest food store is beyond your allowable travel area….

I would think your licence is more important than the car.

    • lol fair enough to me

The car can't catch Covid so it will be fine. The restriction applies to people and politicians.

I'm in the same position as you.. My cars registered address is in a level 3 area whereas I'm in level 4.. I've been queried only once, showed my license, workers permit and off I went. No issues at all so don't stress.

    • thanks for sharing your story haha, makes me less nervous already

Unless Dan has bestowed upon himself more power, the state does not have the authority to discriminate against you in the basis of the ownership of the vehicle you operate.

If the vehicle you are operating is not owned by you, and you don’t have permission to drive it, then the State can indeed discriminate against you by putting you in the clink. :)

However, I think the cops have been applying a modicum of intelligence around what they are doing. I walk through the deserted backstreets of Fitzroy and sip my takeaway hot chocolate. A cop car went past and didn’t do a “Sweeney” style Uturn to give me a fine.

I saw someone bolt for it when the cops pulled over to them! hahahaha

        • Frankly I think burglars should just claim they can’t work from home.

  • Yes… you are the driver
