7eleven Requesting Customers Pull Down Face Masks

Apparently 7Eleven stores have notices requesting customers to "…momentarily pull down their (face) masks…" so their CCTV cameras can capture an image of the customer.

Apart from the fact that we all knew they had CCTV, this would appear to be a total disregard for the current government regulations.

They may reverse this 'request' under public pressure, but it raises the interesting impact of face masks for the general population on all of those other CCTV and facial recognition technologies that our authorities have in place. Are they just walking away from the use of those whilst the current regulations are in place?

Customers entering 7/11 or any other private businesses are subject to the conditions of entry. They can legally ask their customers to remove their face covering or helmets long enough to capture their face.

Customers that refuse can legally be asked to leave the premises.

However they still have to maintain safe working/shopping conditions. In the current environment there are state and federal conditions they have to adhere to.

I'm not saying this would go against those regulations, but in asking people to do so and (at the same time) not providing safe distances etc, then they could be in trouble. It will come down to "are they doing everything to make this condition safe for customers and staff". I don't think asking someone to drop their mask and look at the camera is out of the question, but they allow three people in the same area doing it, then it would be.

To do this properly I think they would have to have someone on the front door giving instructions and holding a queue while people comply. And we all know 7/11 don't like paying their staff, so I don't think they'd pay for the extra person. Not like a bank or post office can do.

      • You can pull your mask down and still stand over 1.5m away from the worker.

If a shopper doesn't want to take their mask off, they can boycott and shop elsewhere.

my lay man's opinion, rightly or wrongly, is that 7/11 staff is likely to be robbed than get covid

    Makes sense đź‘Ť

This is in line with the Victorian regulations. They are allowed to ask you to take the mask off for identification.

It says "Banks, post offices and other services can ask that you remove your face covering to check your identity".

I'm not sure if 7-11 can be classified as a "service" or whether they have a real need to check people's "identity" if they aren't buying tobacco or alcohol.

Especially, because the second sentence then separately talks about "purchase of alcohol and tobacco".

So, it seems like the 1st sentence deals with banks, post offices & other "services", and the 2nd sentence deals with shops, in which only alcohol and tobacco purchases are mentioned.

      • It's not an exhaustive list - it does not specify that it is 'only' those listed which can ask you to remove your face covering, and what they are doing is checking your identity. Locksmiths, for example, are not mentioned as a 'necessary good or service' or under that particular list of exclusions. However I would imagine they would also be allowed to ask people to remove face coverings for identification (e.g. if you locked yourself out of your own home).

7-eleven is classified as a 'necessary good and service' if it is attached to petrol station. Even as stand alone, they would still classify as a food store. So they would be included in the 'services', contrary to the common definition of the word.

Seems fair. Don't like their terms, don't enter their premises.

"…momentarily pull down their (face) masks…"

If it said "pants" instead of (face) masks", then we'd really have a topic of conversation!

    • Undies are simply small pieces of fabric, attached with elastic, to stop you from covering others with your bodily fluid

      • Undies are simply small pieces of fabric

Some would argue that their's is a large piece of fabric.

Check there is nobody <1.5m from you. Quickly pull mask down, flash a smile at the camera. Don't show your teeth if you haven't brushed them for a week and no one would be wiser. Get on with life. Or vote with your feet somewhere that has rules that better suit your preferences. If you don't like the policies stay at home.

Don't let facts get in the way of whining like a massive sook on twitter.

  • I recently visited a Westpac branch and was expecting them to ask me to remove my mask but the person at the door just asked what they could help with and waved me in.
