Which Power Tools Should I Buy?

Just purchased my first home. Looking to buy cordless power tools (drill, circular saw, jigsaw mainly). What brand should I get? Is there a deal I should wait for? Don't want to break the bank.

Edit: planned projects are bathroom re-tile and shower instalation; kitchen cabinetry replacement; building laundry bench; and some outdoor furniture with timber decking.

More info required but - Ozito, only buy them as you need them.

But make sure they buy the brushless versions, especially the circular saw. I made the mistake of buying the brushed version, and it seriously wouldn’t cut the wings off flies.

    • Depending how handy and keen your are, you'll soon realise the infinite numbers of tools you'll want/need

    • Thanks, added more info on what I want to do.

  • If you can wait, every time Aldi have cordless power tools on sale, Bunnings drop the price on comparable Ozito tools. Recently I picked up the Ozito brushless drill/driver skin for $49.95 (RRP $79.95) because Aldi had a tool sale with a brushless drill/driver skin.
I agree with onetwothreefour, only buy what you need, but stay with one ecosystem of batteries and chargers to minimise costs.

  • while I have gone Ozito and im generally happy - picked up the 5 pack box for $199 a while ago - the power is lacking and they do cut out sooner that what you would think.
Definitely wait untill Aldi have a sale on and go for the Brushless when Bunnings reduce them. Thought I read on another post that Aldi was having a tool sale coming up??
checkout the power against other brands etc and perhaps see about higher quality brands.
Occasionally there will be a 2 or 3 pack that is on a very good price and worth the difference in going to.
There is also a lot of convenience in being in one eco system.

for variety of tools. for the home DIY cant beat ozito or ryobi.

i have ryobi 18V and i'm addicted to getting more tools for every little thing. tools are so cheap. good warranty for bunnings,

  • Do you really want a cordless circular saw or jigsaw? The corded ones are much cheaper and much more powerful. Unless you are doing LOTS of renos or are a tradie then it's possibly not worth it.

I have Bosch cordless tools and they are really good but the skins are too expensive. Would consider a grinder but they are $200 - so really think about what tools you might want in the future.

  • Corded tools are cheaper indeed and thus they are considered as low quality nowadays. But my dad owns almost 20-year Dewalt drill and power saw. Though having a cordless drill/driver is very useful.

  • Buy as you need them, pick a brand and go for it. Get a corded circular saw as well.

It sounds as though you will be doing some serious renovation work, not just installing shelves and hanging pictures. Getting a more premium brand might pay off.

I’ve experienced Ozito (pretty ordinary, but not brushless versions), Ryobi (pretty good) and Makita (best of the three by a good margin). Makita I used doesn’t have a battery level meter which is annoying. It’s very handy to know whether your battery is full or empty as you are working.

I own Ryobi, half a dozen batteries and almost 20 skins and can’t complain. Have served me well over major renovations. Including moving & rebuilding walls, building a deck etc.

Getting Aldi stuff isn’t a great idea as you can’t get the tools anytime you want, only when they sell them.
