Home Phone. Mobile, and Internet Bundles for Pensioners

Are there any good home phone, internet (NBN), and mobile plans out there for pensioners? My mum is looking for a new provider as her current one is costing over $100pm for minimal usage..
She lives in Wodonga (which has an '02' area code) and she just uses the net for basic web browsing and netflix. Her mobile usage is what I'd call low-moderate. A few calls and sms' per day, and a small amount of data.

Any recommendations will be much appreciated!

  • no such thing as a "bundle" with home phone, internet, and mobile. Better off going on something like an aldi prepaid plan, and then whatever home/internet provider that is cheaper.

  • +2

Aussie BB have senior NBN plans with a VOIP home phone and 100GB of data from $50 a month.

Add a mobile plan from Aussie BB for $15 a month including 1GB data or an Aldi mobile plan with 3GB data for $15 a month

    Works out $65 a month.

  • Get a mobile deal if she is a low user.
Set up the wifi/ hotspot for her. Simple to use.
$120 yr 120GB incl unlimited calls & txts @ Catch Connect. (works out at $10mth 10GB mth)
    Save $1080 year.

    • I second that. Don't bother with the ADSL connection with a modem if it is just for 1 person. Put some funds into a decent 4G mobile plan (Telstra provides the best coverage) and hot spot it. It'll save u a bunch.

    • I thought about this but I think she'll prefer having a wired connection and a home phone still, as she still has a desktop PC that she uses regularly, and she'll call her mates on the home phone for longer chats. Good idea though!

  • Thanks guys. ABB have decent plans for around 50-60pm, but I've also found Westnet offer a seniors plan - $39.99pm includes basic speed NBN and phone with calls included.

Anyone have any experience with Westnet?

Agree on the mobile deals - there's some good low usage plans out there from ALDI and Woolworths.

    • Yes, grandparents have just set up with Westnet, however can’t tell you much as it’s only been on for a few weeks.

Order and setup was easy, except it did take about half an hour on the phone, given all the conditions required to be agreed to, so if you want it easier maybe online is better.

Rest of setup, install was very easy, didn’t even need to visit them as setup was easy. You need their modem and that requires a 2 year plan to be free ($10 shipping fee). This is required for Voip and to make it easier for them in future with support.

Slight issue with having number ported as their setup was FTTC connection. Phone is lost (no connection) while transfer goes through, but this only took 2 days to do. Being elderly we needed to train them how to make emergency call with mobile, just in case, while transfer was being made. We had expected this could have been upto a week.

All is working well, just will wait to see if the 50G is enough, but they don’t download much video etc, so usage is only 3G after 2-3 weeks.

Then if you use a $10 pm plan for a mobile it’s pretty cheap. In fact the $40 Westnet plan was cheaper than their Telstra PSTN plan and local and national calls free and they now also have calling number display which they didn’t have before.

If you go over 50G you can still use internet and phone just speed reduced. Voip calls are indistinguishable from the old PSTN calls.

      So far quite happy

      • Appreciate the detailed reply, thank you!
I doubt mum would ever go over 5gig, let alone 50gig, so shouldn't be any issues there.
I'd prefer her to get a new modem anyway, as you say the support is easier that way. (I'm interstate so can't even visit at the moment..)
She's pretty savvy with the mobile so I'll find her a good plan for that, losing the home phone for a few days won't be an issue.

        Cheers!

  • tangerine 25 mbps unlimited data =$50 + byo modem =0 + $10 for calls = $60 for 6 months. then $70.
I use aldi 365 prepaid for remaining calls.
    used spintel before.
overseas all centres may be a problem.

    • Cheers Peccadilloes, thats a good deal for some faster internet speeds! I'm a tangerine customer now so we could get referral credit also!
Agree with the os call centres being problematic, though most ISP's do this..
