Intel Core i9-9900KF $599, i9-9900K $659, i9-9900 $569 + Delivery @ Shopping Express

470

Lowest prices I've seen for those trapped on Z390/Z370 motherboards who want an upgrade to fast i9s (much cheaper than deranged eBay seller prices). Otherwise go AMD Ryzen 3000 series or 10th Gen Intel if building new. KF model in main link is overclockable but has iGPU disabled. All of these i9s have 8 Cores and 16 Threads

Make sure your Z390/Z370 is not a piece of junk VRM-wise if you want to overclock these i9s. Reference table of all Z390 motherboards provided below (aim for white zone motherboard or above for decent ability to OC i9-9900K/KF CPUs):

Delivery appears reasonable (under $11 for me in NSW).

i9-9900K (overclockable and iGPU enabled)
i9-9900 (locked CPU and iGPU enabled)

my maximus 10 hero isnt listed but should be ok for 9900 after a bios update

    • Is a Maximum Ranger VIII?

      • No, not a compatible socket

People have done some crazy things by running (and also overclocking!) 9900Ks and other 9th gen chips on Z170 motherboards similar to the Maximus Ranger VIII. Though it relies on BIOS modifications and is definitely not officially supported by intel or the board manufacturers

Awkward CPU to buy at the moment. As OP said really only good if you are stuck on the older chipset.

If you are buying new go 10600K/10900K for mainly gaming systems or Ryzen options for better productivity/all-round performance.

    • Why not 10700k? It’s an excellent proc and performs better than 10600k. It’s closer to 10900k than it is to the 10600k and the price sits almost dead bang in the middle.

      • To be honest, with the level of binning now days you pretty much get what you pay for in terms of performance, its just whether you will use that performance (hence the AMD vs Intel, general vs gaming).

Most of the time when people are making suggestions like 10600k vs 10700k it will just be that it fits into a build (price wise) the best. You can line up the entire package do its balanced price wise across all its components without any major weaknesses. If you see yourself needed additional computing power, go for the 10700k, but just consider where else you could put that extra money (the traditional space is the GPU) for your personal usage case.

Its a dangerous game of creep where an extra $50-$150 will always get you better performance, but you have to draw a line somewhere.

      • 10700K doesn't really have a good reason to buy it. Performs identical to a 10600K in gaming, gets beaten by the 3900X in productivity.

Gamers Nexus review for reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UMMPjqLe8g

Even with a 2080 Ti at 1080p the 10700K doesn't seperate itself. So save the extra money and put that towards a better GPU.

Ive got the i5-9600k. I reckon this will be my last intel. sick of needing new mobo

    • You're good for many years with that CPU especially if your using just for gaming :)

      • +1

Yeh i realise that but you know…shiny new things

        • +1

Well you can probably get a decent price for the 9600k on used market 🙂… As long as you enjoy it.. All that matters.

      • My 3500X disagrees. The lack of SMT really kills it in some titles.

        • Precisely which I’ve recently switched from Ryzen to Intel which is what most people are not doing. But it’s only for gaming so…

          • @yoke2018: Either I'm stupid or the start of your first sentence makes no sense.

        • thats where the higher clock rates of an intel chip will do well over a ryzen.. when all is equal the intel does outdo ryzen in majority of titles but eitehr way if you become GPU bound these CPU's will be just fine and only small % in difference .. so really only an issue in competetive fps titles where u want max frames i guess.. :)

Also have a 9600k. Will be waiting for a used 9990kf and will likely not go intel again for the same reason. The price of z490 boards is ridiculous

  • +1

10600kf is a better deal if building from scratch… Tuned you can get it as good or better than this performance wise.

Only good if already on a z390 and need a CPU upgrade… In saying that a 10600 + mb isn't much more if you reuse RAM and other components.

    • Honestly looking at the differences in performance and power consumption, I can't even see the point in upgrading to either from i7-8700K. Hard pass.

      • 100% right, 10600k is basically a 8700k, definitely wouldn't make sense… And if your mainly gaming, you have an amazing cpu for that purpose for some time to come.

I do a lot more than game, but yeah. I'd love to have more cores to run VMs and would definitely make use of them but I just can't justify it. I can still run one or 2 VMs, or game and have web browsers open, but I also have a family to feed and the first upgrades should be the kid's awful Acer laptops that they have to take to school - even after replacing HDD with SSD those machines suck.

          • @syousef: Get em new laptops, and get a 4900X next year. The jump from a 8700k to any other Intel chip just isn't big enough for justify the huge price!

          • +1

@syousef: tell me about it… my daughter has an acer .. perfomance for price is good but losing keys off the keyboard n small things like that .. never again.

            • @scud70: I have a 2-3 yo Acer Predator gaming laptop from a bargain here that isn't bad. It went for about 60% of retail at the time. The one issue is the rubberised texture picks up fingerprints like no other laptop I'd ever seen before. Other than that it's been pretty sweet actually. Acer can make good machines it seems. They just tend to make very bad junk at the low end - the kind of unusable junk that could be made much better if they'd increase the price by $50. To be fair the laptops the kids have have lasted for some time.

I'd have already replaced them but my kids are still in primary school and the school forced us onto BYOD this year with almost no notice. I think it was October last year when the parents were told with no consultation that starting this year all kids in year 3 and above had to BYOD. So a lot of kids got laptops for Christmas. I had literally just bought them desktop computers, so was kicking myself at the time, but with the whole learn from home thing and Covid, good desktops were better than laptops anyway.

      • If you watch the video from hardware unboxed, a delidded overclocked 8700k basically performs to the level of a stock 10900k which is simply incredible.
Since I’m moving from Ryzen to Intel from scratch I’ve upgraded to a z490 and 10900KF. Although delivery/restock times for the new i9 is seriously long like 2 months.

  • already sold out lol
