Great toastie maker. Takes the larger slices of bread too.
Big enough or you have to go for the big one?

I have 'The Original' and it takes wonder white sized slices.
better than Kmart $7.5 one ? can we change plates to make waffles ?
I started with that one but it's crap, too small/flat.
The larger sized one is far better. For $15 I'm happy enough … (ignorance is bliss perhaps compared to these branded ones)

I also had the $7 one and it is utter crap. I traded it in for the $15 one and I'm mostly happy with it. It takes large bread sizes easily, a lot of filling, and it seals well. The middle is toasted golden, but not as crisp as the original 74 breville.
I use the Breville one at home and have used the Kmart version at work - the Kmart one doesn't get hot enough to make a good toastie.
I have one of these and the coating comes off the plates after a while, and there is no way to replace the plates.
I would suggest that if you are going to use this often you get one with replacable plates or cast iron plates.

Mine was the same, coating started to come off in less than a year. And it had not been used very often. NOT recommend.
Not sure what you're doing it it? Mine is at least 7 years old (bought it before I moved into my current house which is why I can date it) and haven't had that issue. Mind you, I only use a cloth on it and try not to put so much stuff that it will overflow the toastie.
Same problem with mine. I replaced it with a Sunbeam GR6250, still great 12 months on.
Same issue as well on the first and replacement one we bought. Might replace with sandwich press or another brand.
Yeah, I had one where the coating seemed to come off as well. So had to throw it out and got, I think, a Sunbeam to replace it. Which just wouldn't toast half the bread no matter what I tried. Somehow I'd lost the receipt otherwise I would have pushed for a refund. So it got thrown out as well and I went back to another Breville.
Unfortunately, something that works which you have to replace every couple of years is better than something that might last longer, but just doesn't do the job in the first place.
How does this go against the original 74?
I have one for many years and has been fine. No issues
