Auspost Not Delivering to Home, Have to Pick up from Post Office?

Hi all, just wondering what your experience has been like with Auspost deliveries as of late.

My 2 most recent orders from Amazon AU were "delivered" through Auspost, and by "delivered" I mean I get a card in the post box asking me to pick up parcel at the local post office.

  • Both packages were small - in a soft padded bag about the size of a book
  • My whole family has been working from home since start of lockdown, no attempted deliveries apart from the card. I've had multiple successful deliveries through other courier services - only been having problems with Auspost.
  • On the Auspost site, I have my delivery preferences set to "Leave at front door".
  • No signature required on the package
  • On the shipping label, Amazon has even put "Leave at front door". No other warnings or restrictions etc.
  • I am in Melbourne metro (Victoria)

This would normally be a minor inconvenience for me but with the latest VIC COVID restrictions, going out is not only a hassle but also a risk to the health me and my family, and may even result in a fine if I get pulled over by the cops.

Plus, this is literally their job to deliver! What is the use of paying for delivery if I have to go and pick stuff up?

got 2x25kg bags of dog food delivered this morning… i put to "leave in car port" so the guy didn't have to bring up to the front door, but he did anyway. Felt sorry for him

    • haha, I've been contemplating ordering 30L bags of cat litter from Amazon…

      • I recently ordered some and it was delivered no problem.

All comes down to the postie. I had same one for years, not one issue… then got another guy who never delivered anything that needed signing for, but would do some 'leave at front door' deliveries. Eventually I complained to Australia Post and was told my driveway was too steep so was OH&S issue, despite me demonstrating years of 'no issue'… anyway that postie has left and new one is gold, zero issues.

TLDR- they will make up any old shite to justify not bringing it to your door.

Agree 100%. Its all about the postie. My situation mimics Mooney to a tee.

    • We are in the same boat here, terrible local postie won't even deliver up our road. Puts all our letters in a big box and if we are lucky drops them up to a different post office in the next post code every few weeks…
Complained to auspost but nothing came from it so have just changed our suburb with RMS and everyone else to the next post code.
Sometimes Amazon prime gets dropped off other times it doesn't, think it depends on how busy the startrack guy is.
Does it help to complain to Amazon? My new job has strict hours so I can only make it to post office if I take a day off!

      • My experience from complaining was Australia Post just invested time in finding excuses. The situation did not improve until the postman left. When you chat to the guy at the post office they just shrug and say 'it happens a lot'.

Amazon cant fix Auspost or Startrack. Your only other option is to pay premium couriers.

It also makes a difference in you live in a unit or house. We would always get cards in the post box when in a unit, now we live in a house they always deliver to the door, even if we're not home they leave outside the front door.

    • I see… in my case it's a house so no issue there.

Welcome to online shopping, the BS experience we all get.

I’m regularly receiving neighbour parcels and walking over to deliver it down the street.

I’m also missing 3 parcels, probably will have to chargeback the seller, so your inconvenience is probably best case problem.

    • Missing parcels have probably slipped from a sorting shelf in the PO. I went to complain about a moderate-size parcel undelivered to my unit in Innisfail ~ 3 years ago. That was on a Thursday. The postie had tried to deliver it to a different unit, parcel had been sent returned to sender. The next Monday, post van arrived before 0900 with 4 (of 6 missing) packets long overdue…

    • Thankfully I haven't had any issues with missing parcels so far, just the card/delivery not attempted issues.

Try to contact Auspost to request them to redeliver back to you as instructed on the parcel. If you don't want the hassle of phone call you can contact them via online form.

    • Good idea thanks - I didn't see this on the card so I didn't know that was an option.

I had one or two issues with couriers not delivering when I was home, but I almost always get carded by Austpost. I even caught one of them doing it and fronted him on it. He apologised and said the timelines they work under mean they do it sometimes to speed things up or they get it from their manager.

    • This is terrible if it is systemic behaviour. They are literally coming to your house to deliver the card already, why not put in another 10% of effort to deliver the parcel as well?

They are literally wasting our time and resources, plus people at the post office, so they can shave 30 seconds off their delivery time.

    • I know someone that worked as a Aust Post parcel deliverer. She was paid $0.80 per parcel delivered, that included non delivered ones taken to the local PO for collection. It took her 8hrs to del just under 100 items for about $80, so there is no incentive to put in the extra effort if you take 10 sec to put a card in letter box instead of walking to the door. If you are delivering to close houses it might be OK but she had a large area of acreage properties included in her run so it took much longer to deliver.

      • I hope that's on top of their base rate

        • Nope, that was full pmt for the job. She worked for the delivery contractor as a sub contractor. Hence why she only lasted a cpl of weeks, it just was not worth the 25min drive to collect van and parcels then drive home after.

      • Thanks that’s is good info and it makes sense then if they are incentivised the same whether they deliver the package or not.

  • Thanks all for sharing your experiences. I lodged a complaint/query through the auspost site - let's see what comes of it.

I also checked with my wife what time the postie delivered the card this morning - she said she was having coffee looking out the window and saw him drop the card off in our post box at 9.30 am.

And I also got a SMS notification at 9.24 this morning saying my parcel was waiting at the Post Office.

So this leads me to believe that the postie literally didn't have the package with them when they came out for delivery this morning.

I've had the same experience, and I get the impression that they do things in this order:

      • Fill out all the cards at the depot.
      • Load all the parcels into the truck.
      • Drop all the parcels at the post office.
      • Deliver all the cards to mailboxes along with any other letters.

So I don't think they have any intention of delivering any of the parcels.

I don't know if they really are under time pressure or if they're just lazy. Either way, they shouldn't offer the service if they're not going to deliver it.

        This is really terrible.

I can understand if they actually attempted delivery and had the parcel with them. Perhaps they didn't think anyone was home etc. or maybe the driver was running behind schedule that day - I could sort of understand that.

But to plan to not deliver and expect you to come and pick it up - this is literally not performing the service they are being paid for.

Yeah, everyone in our area seems to have a similar experience. We're in a small community so nobody really wants to complain too much, but it's still a bit frustrating, especially during COVID as you mentioned.

We've also got a baby at home so delivery is the go-to option for us.

But maybe the posties are struggling during COVID too, being asked to do more with less. So yeah, we're just accepting it as the norm. It'd just be nice to know exactly what to expect.

@Payne: Point noted, I will try and be a bit more understanding.

  • I ordered some masks on July 22 from Sydney to Melbourne off eBay they were posted on the 27 of July still waiting for them I find eBay free postage to be very inconsistent.I suspect though it’s the seller lying about when they posted it judging by the feedback.

    • They maybe tracking which you can check?

      • No tracking unfortunately

Last year I ordered a couple things supposedly coming from Chullora NSW but both orders came from China.

    • They probably have a whole bad of prepaid envelopes and registered your package and tracking ID but have not actually taken it to the post office yet.

  • Ive also been suspicious of the carded deliveries. One thing that irritates me is that I get sent "how did we go?" surveys - funny thing is - they are ONLY sent when a delivery has been successful and NEVER when a card has been left for parcel collection. Shame, as they did really well with yesterdays delivery (ordered the day before).

Haven't you heard of something like 200 PO closing in Vic and closing down some logistics and your worried about this trivial crap occupying there precious resources !

    • Yes, trivial things like whether Australia Post is satisfactorily delivering Australia's post. Jebus…

  • This is the Oz Post "GAME"… they make out they had knocked but no answer…

Their call cards are all pre-written out back at in the lunch room.

When they reach your destination, they simply place the pre-written card into you letterbox.

You need to contact Australian Post, to lodge a formal complaint.

  • same here too but with me it is They left the parcel at the front door (maybe i have two front doors here )I tried to complain but nada was done just take the posties word for it am awaiting parcels from over seas too one was sent to perth when i am in New south Wales and supposedly it is still there since the 21st of last month and the other one was sent to Auckland and is also still sitting there too (wonder if i ask Santa maybe he will deliver them as Christmas presents

  • i must be the lucky bugga. My postie and my parcel delivery guys are great, knock at my door everytime, if not there they card me, no leaving stuff around for thieving housing commission neighbours to steal.
And i reward that with a bottle at xmas

I haven't had an issue with the postie leaving a card when the instruction is "leave at door" or whatever, I would go off my nut.

And when I get told that the vendor won't accept leave at door, I leave all the negative feedback and nasty emails to the vendor. I reckon it's my risk to have parcel left, and the vendor shouldn't get to override that… so also Aus Post gets an earful for putting their request above mine.

My postie blasts the horn as they pull up in driveway - makes me furious every time just for a moment, but when I see that it was just a heads-up and they are approaching the door by the time I come out, I smile and accept that it's a pretty good system short of having a more sophisticated system to notify me that they're approaching.

  • The parcel contractor in our area doesn't attempt delivery and doesn't card for our block of units, he/she just dumps it all directly to the post office!

If you aren't tracking the item or it's untracked the first you know about it is when you get a 2nd notice card from the regular postie.

I've complained using the online form but they never respond.

I think I'll have to complain for every tracked parcel that isn't carded.
