Recommendations for Mid-range Monitor ($500-$1000)

I'm currently looking to purchase a new monitor, and have seen a few good deals on here over the last few days.

Current top picks are:

  • Xiaomi Mi Curved 34" 144Hz WQHD 21:9
  • Dell 4K UltraSharp 27" IPS 60Hz USB-C Monitor U2720Q

The downsides for each that's stopped me from pulling the trigger is:

  • Xiaomi -> No USB-C Support, so can't charge MacBook Pro
  • Dell -> Long delivery timeframe, ideally would like it delivered (or pickup) by end of next week.

Will mostly be using it for work (development), but would be great if it can handle some light gaming.

I think I'd benefit more from IPS over VA as would mostly be for work? Will I see a significant improvement going for 144Hz over 60Hz for general dev work?

Any help with recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

  • Unless you're editing photos, I'd go the Xiaomi for the extra real estate and can always get a usbc hub for peripherals.

Refresh rate won't matter much for programming.

    Use this to compare sizes
    https://socialcompare.com/en/tools/compare-sizes

    Type this into advanced mode:
    24 inch 16:9|31.1×55.3cm|
    24 inch 16:9|31.1×55.3cm|
    34 inch 21:9|33.48×80cm|

    OR

    27 inch 16:9|335.53x596.65mm|
    34 inch 21:9|33.48×80cm|

    • Thanks - that comparison site was quite helpful!

After looking at that, I think I'll go for the Xiaomi as the extra real estate is huge and it's not too big of an inconvenience to run an extra cable.

  • Those 2 have nothing in common, work out what you want rather than picking at random.

    • Sorry, you're right. I realise they are two very different displays and I know they each have their advantages for difference uses - just trying to decide which would be the best "middle-ground" display.

My only main question now is around IPS vs. VA for let's say a 80/20 split between development & gaming.

  • I'm using the Xiaomi now, basically the best bang for the buck. It doesnt have USBC but thats easily resolved. Any similar IPS is going to be at least double the price.

  • Best low-mid budget monitor is the ViewSonic vx2758-2kp-mhd. 27inch IPS, 144hz, 1ms, QHD for $400-500.

  • Dell U2720Q
