Do You Think Price Is Justified for Newly Launched Sony's WH-1000XM4 for $549.95

Noteworthy features include:
Speak to chat
Clearer voice calls
Play/pause when worn/removed
Multipoint connection
DSEE EXTREME

The point of my post is to find out if the price is justified? Should one go for XM3 over XM4 due to almost $200 price difference.

Any stores in Australia apart from sony official selling these right now, if not, when is it expected ?

Any deals or is it too early?

Edit: Just to add to it, using amex offer on sony store and 2.1% cashback it comes down to $488.40 .

Street price will drop pretty soon. This is just to capture the early adopters.

    • Just to add to it, using amex offer on sony store and 2.1% cashback it comes down to $488.40 . Still not worth it?

      • 2.1% cashback is not a great discount on full price, no.

  • +1

Its almost never worth it to be an early adopter.

The XM4 will come down in price, unlikely ever being close to the XM3 as it will continue to fall also but the gap will diminish in a few month's time to perhaps $100.

At that point, perhaps it is worth the difference.

if only all humanity stand together and refuse to buy newly release product with price like this (listen apple fanboi) - then all those greedy corporations will have no choice but to lower or put more reasonable prices as they cant afford warehouse costs and bad publications (selling zero unit in a month after release date? what?).

but ofcourse when people camping for 4 days to get $1800 phone which is no unique whatsoever, then……. you know what happen next…..

      • +7

        Au contraire.

Every major endevour has its benefactors. This is a concept that has existed for centuries if not longer.

Early adopters are the modern equivalent. They are paying a price the rest of us aren't in exchange for the novelty of being first.

Remove the priviledge of being patron and it is the rest of us that shoulders that cost.

      • selling zero unit in a month after release date? what?

Can you imagine that? Like your a company all hyped for this new thing that you made thinking yeah we got the best and were proud of it, and then release it hoping to cash in on all those glorious sales but no one buys your product on release date or even a month after it being released?

  • XM3's have LDAC don't they?

    • DSEE EXTREME is what I should have pointed to

    • Yep the XM3's have LDAC. I haven't used as I don't have a device with it.

  • Depends what you currently own but based on what the prices for the previous models did I'd just sit back and wait for a special. I bought the XM3's on a good deal and I really like them but those new features aren't really of any benefit to me except I believe the XM4's support being connected to multiple devices at the same time. I might be interested in a upgraded as that's the biggest weakness for the XM3's for me but only if I can get a good deal.

  • Definitely wait for deals.

Kogan had them online briefly for preorder at $489, shipping on 25th Aug.

    • I would wait for competitors to launch this so I could price match with sony and take advantage of amex offer.

Buy with latitude credit card price protection and claim the difference within one year when it reaches a price you think it's low

  • I bought bose qc 35 ii.not satisfied at all. My apple earpods are better:( Will need to try these sonies out.

  • I just watched Sony's promo, a lot of features seem software based, anyone know if they will come to the 1000XM3s?

    • Probably not unless you jailbreak it.

Manufacturers will sandbag their old products. If they do not, no one will buy their new products. If they wait for people to buy their new product before updating the old one, customers will lose trust and switch brand altogether.

Pretty much an XM3 with support for 2 devices. Not going to lie, quite happy with the xm3's right now given these look exactly the same, noise cancelling was already industry leading and sound was pretty good.

    • +1

Same; my XM3s still work perfectly fine (plus got them for about $165 thanks to Sony X and Amex), so won't be upgrading mine unless they cark it

    • +1

yep no need to upgrade for upgrade sake, they have worked fine the past year, nothing revolutionary to get me to spend 400+ on them (XM3's were $270 on that GGC deal)

i use the XM3's for work calls all the time and never heard a voice complaint, unsure if the "bad mics" are a bad batch

  • +1

These will be 350-ish in a few months. Incremental upgrade so no massive reason to upgrade although multi-device connectivity is handy.

I hope they have improved the microphone, that's the only disappointing area of the XM3's.

    • Yes. Voice calls is my area of concern for XM3. Will wait for proper reviews regarding this improvement on XM4 to decide.

  • What was the launch price for the XM3s?

    • +2

$499.95 RRP; they went up to $549.95

  • I want the best sound quality. Should the lack of aptX HD be a concern?
My Oppo phone has LDAC in the Developer settings, which is theoretically better, but there's conflicting reports.

    • Current reviews on youtube confirm slightly better rich sound quality than xm3

      • Yes, true. It's a shame they dropped aptX HD, because it's an excellent Bluetooth codec.
It appears Sony is going forward exclusively with it's own LDAC codec.

  • When I was in Malaysia 2 years ago the Xm2s when converted to AUD were $650. Might be some discounts at Xmas with AA. They may even have some on sale after release. Don't even think about hoping to get the Xm4s under $300 till at least this time next year. Sony have worked out their little bread and butter in this NC market. Actually they are doing the same as what Bose were doing. The new one looks exactly the same as the previous model, but now though they have stepped it up a notch again.with the improved features. Being able to multi connect to devices is a big tick for alot of ppl.

The price will drop, black Friday matters

    • I see what you did there XD

  • Sony has made it an almost yearly update. Each version has launched at the $500-550 mark, and then come down to ~$350 (and let, if you're savvy) with relative frequency about 6 months after launch.

My guess is minor updates, so either pick up an older model for cheap, or wait for prices to drop.

  • No way, history tells me that the M4 will eventually be $350ish

  • It is called Product Profit Curve… a bell shape curve… delineating the profit margin over the product's life span.

Take up is slow at first, but builds to reach the zenith of this curve, in time hopefully to beat the influx of copy-cat manufacturers.

Once competition is established, the profit margin then follows a downward curve.

I suggest you wait and buy at this downward curve.

  • I'd be doing a side by side comparison if possible, i love my XM3 and don't see how much better the new ones could be?

    • Why are you even considering an "upgrade" if you're perfectly satisfied with what you currently have?

      • +1

I'm not? I'm saying that op might be better off saving some money and just buying the xm3.

    • Totally not worth it here, wait for m5. This is more of a ā€œSā€ upgrade.

  • I am very happy with my XM3 but will definitely upgrade when the XM4 come down in price. The multipoint connection alone is reason enough for me. Besides if I paid full retail wouldn't my OzBargain membership be cancelled?

My XM3 will go to my wife and her XM2 will either be handed down to another family member or replace the Sennheiser RS 170 hooked up to the Denon Receiver.

    • +1

Same strategy here, ill upgade later, give XM3s to the missus.

I've owned XM1,2 and 3s. Early adopted two of them, as I was travelling in Europe almost every week. Zero travelling these days, no need to upgrade.

I've never liked Bose SQ so when the XM1s were announced I had to try, never looked back since. But these are for travelling only. There are much better sounding headphones at half the price for home use.

Sony are one of the only companies left which make quality reliable products, where you get what you pay for. Never had an issue.

  • Who cares anyway?
You like it. You buy it.
    Simple

  • Just price matched with sony for $500 using ebay deal.
Comes to 438 for me using amex offer and cashback.

    Going to buy it

  • Cross post but can confirm that JB Hi-Fi are good to go down to $400 for these. Clicked and collect today in Victoria, after calling up and citing a verbal deal I got elsewhere (which I made up!). Maybe can go more aggressive but I felt $400 or a brand new release is fair.

See my post history for my order number.

    Happy listening.
