Best place to get one of the new Kindles? (when they get here)

Well after seeing the specs on the new kindles figure this may just be the point where I give in and buy one.

However it made me think hows the best way to get one?

Fine its a bit cheaper off Amamzon but then theres the issue about OS delivary or the forwarding company and what happens if/when it breaks down (also a side point if the subsidized ad thing works in Oz - especially if you just get a WiFi one).

Anyway that question aside wheres the best place to get them in Oz and have there ever been an Oz Bargain way to not pay full price?

As far as I see Big W and Dick Smith are the go and looking through the archives I don't see they have ever discounted them.

If thats the case i might as well pre order one once they are taking orders but has there been a cheaper way to get them (sales etc.) based on the current kindle range?

Thanks

Get it direct from Amazon. You need an Amazon account to use anyway (to buy books :-) the delivery is super fast 2-3 days. And if there is ever an issue Amazon support is brilliant. Mine broke, they sent out a free replacement and a postage paid box to return the dead one. I bought the non subsidised one and if you pick the international kindle they ship to Oz. Don't get 3G, waste of money and they use the Vodafone network.

    • Wow thanks for that, didn't realize they will ship to Australia.

Thought since they are shipping through Dick Smith & Big W they wouldn't ship internationally and were only shipping to USA?

      • As far as I know, it's only the Kindle Fire (android, colour kindle) that they won't ship overseas at the moment. Make sure you pick the non-US kindle here http://amzn.to/okeKFZ and it should all work fine.

        • Sadly it looks like the basic one is the only one they re shipping internationally at the moment. Touch says US only and when I tried to get to the international touch from your link above no loving :-(

    • I have a 3G one… never had a problem with the network.. always reliable

kind of sad that I got an ipad too… the kindle app on ipad does the same thing as an actual kindle

      • Yeah but one of the point fo rme is smaller, lighter and only charge every 30 hrs of reading. I was looking at a fire but thought its the same issues as the iPad and the normal kindles are a better fit.

BTW you ever use the browser or webmail through it? They were the only reasons I was even considering a 3G but someone ssaid they were awful so would appreciate personal experiences from someone who actually has one and uses it..

        • I was with someone travelling around Southern Africa who got 3G everywhere bar one or two places. The browser was very basic but fine for hotmail/yahoo and news which is good enough if you don't bring your phone when on holiday but I don't think you are technically allowed to use 3G for browsing.

I want one for travel. Do you think the touch is a better option than the keyboard?

        • the web browsing sucks…. the keyboard on my 3g has no numbers

      • Live like me in regional NSW with no Vodafail… 3G Kindle is $50 extra of wasted tech.

  • BTW @mineallmine the touch is pre-order only for now. I'm sure they will ship it too :-)

  • I have a keyboard, not sold on the touch. I like that the screen doesn't get finger prints so never really sold on the touch. I think they changed the rule so if you use 3G for browsing you now pay a fee (could be wrong). I have a friend who swears by calibre (http://calibre-ebook.com/) who uses that to push web content to them when travelling. But that's what my mobile is for…
