Sim card that doesn't need a recharge

Porting out from Telstra and wanting to go on a Boost sim I recently bought. Tried the Optus simcard that came with it but I need to recharge. What's a $2 simcard I can use for this that doesn't need a recharge? Hoping to just pick one up from Coles or Woolies the next time I go.

Thanks

  • There are heaps of discussions of this topic, lots of people are switching to Boost…. me included. Just type in "Boost porting" and there are a number of discussions about porting from Telstra to Boost.

    • What method did you use for porting? I was suggested the Optus method. I had a look, people just say port to the Optus network but I'm just wondering if there's a sim that doesn't require a recharge

  • From my own experience porting over I used a Kogan $2 SIM kit (got spares from when I got the family on Kogan but now we have all switched to Boost), ported from Telstra to Kogan then from Kogan to Boost.

I'm pretty sure Coles/Optus can activate and "Recharge Later" but don't quote me on that as I haven't done it with Coles before.

A long time ago you could activate Kogan $2 sim cards and use them to receive verification codes for GYG burritos.
They've made it so that if you don't pay, the SIM card will not activate, and you won't be able to receive SMS or calls.

You need SMS to be receivable if you're using SIM cards to carrier hop.

      • It seems that they must have changed it to stamp out people wanting to port in and out for cheap I guess

  • If you're willing to spend $5, then Dodo (Optus Network) has a $5 p.m. voice & text only plan.

The Aldi $5 sims are another option, but Aldi is on Telstra Network, unfortunately.

    • Thanks but iirc they don't have those at Cole's do they? My current plans actually expires tomorrow and I'm hoping to activate before the 10th so I can do it again next year. Given how long this sim took I'm not too confident in buying one online. I guess I'll just buy a few $2 ones from Cole's and try my luck if there's no other suggestions

  • +1

Catch 30 day sim is $1.50 after cashback but you'll have to wait for it to be delivered. Catch uses the Optus network.

No recharge is required as it already comes with 15GB & unlimited calls/sms.

    • Thanks but if I'm going to get something delivered am I not better off just getting a blank sim from boost?

      • I've never been with Boost so not sure what the process is. But you could actually use the Catch sim for the full 30 days before porting to Boost. A cheap way to extend your plan.
