Xiaomi Mi Band 5 NFC Version $65.99 + $28.82 Shipping @ Expansys Australia

98

This deal is significant, as it is the rare 'NFC' version, which is better than the Global version that is usually sold in Australia.

The NFC version is usually only available on the Chinese domestic market. Here it is being sold by Expansys Australia, it is sold in Australian dollars, it includes GST, and includes a warranty from Expansys. It seems to be a safer bet than using AliExpress to import it.

Why is the NFC version better? It has the pulse oximeter / SpO2 sensor built in, which measures your blood oxygen levels. The SpO2 sensor is actually inactive at this time, but could be activated with a firmware (software) upgrade from Xiaomi, at some stage in the future. This SpO2 sensor also emits infrared light, which the heart rate monitor uses (which is already active on this model.) That means when you sleep, it emits invisible light to track your heart rate.

Expansys also has the non-NFC version for $10 less (which I believe beats Kogan's price). But the non-NFC version, or the Global version, can never be upgraded in the future to measure blood oxygen levels. It also measures your pulse using visible light, which may be less accurate and brighter when you're sleeping. The NFC version is the better unit.

I just bought 2 Mi Band NFC units for $160.80, including courier delivery within Australia.

This post could almost be spam. Almost $95 for the standard Mi Band 5 Chinese version..?? I purchased one for $41AUD delivered two weeks ago on AliExpress.

      yeah
at this price, might as well get the amaze blip

    • It's not the 'standard' Chinese version. It's the NFC version. You also get it sent with a courier, with tracking, rather than with China Post.

    • +3

Whenever I see a shipping charge that high, I assume its being sent from China via express courier

You can get it for $69.05 shipped within Australia

What's the big deal about a pulse oximeter? Unless you have respiratory depression because of illness, lung damage, or sedating medication (midazolam etc) you will have an SpO2 in the normal range reading of 95% - 100%.

    • +3

theoretically you could use to detect sleep apnea before it causes lasting damage. Probl relevant to most who snore and/or are overweight. I'm no doctor btw and this is no medical advice.

    • +1

agreed, little value for the average healthy bullet proof. However for others it remains a useful tool in fitness & sickness (ie possible early detection of CCP virus.)

      • +1

        Nobody is bullet proof.

    • +2

Better question - what's so good about a pulse oximeter that ISN'T ENABLED and that you MAY NEVER be able to use.

      • +1

Better than the competition it seems - I don't think that any other has SpO2, and certainly no band supported by Gadgetbridge has, which is why I am buying it (from cn, this is too $) in the hopes it gets enabled after Mi collects enough data to make it reliable, which I suppose it's the only reason to have launched w it disabled… but it's all my speculation.

No one is "healthy bullet proof". Health and teeth are much cheaper and less painful to keep good than to fix after borked…🤣

Apple Watch is introducing it in watch 6. Not to bash Xiaomi. But I don’t think I would trust a $50 band to have the same accuracy as a company who invests millions of dollars into R and D.

        • Honor band 5 has Sp02

      • +2

The other activity trackers with pulse oximeter launched in the same way.

The Huawei GT2 watch and the Fitbit Charge 3 both launched with SpO2 sensor included but not activated. Both devices received firmware upgrades in early 2020 that activated their pulse oximeters.

So, yes, people must know that the Mi Band 5 NFC has just been released with its SpO2 sensor inactive. But I'd say there's a very good chance that it will follow the path of Huawei and Fitbit and get a firmware upgrade to activate it. If you get the standard Mi Band 5, it doesn't have the sensor. For the price difference, I think it's worth getting the NFC model, plus you get invisible infrared heart tracking.

    • this might be more useful now due to
the COVID 19 virus may have long term effects on lung capacity..

      • It's very true. If you go to a hospital, they put a pulse oximeter on your finger (it's like a plastic clip on the tip of your finger). A reading of 95% blood oxygen (or above) is considered normal. If it dips below 95%, the triage nurses will get worried, and probably suspicious that you might have an infection in your chest.

Apart from this discussion about the Mi Band 5 NFC, it's worth having a pulse oximeter at home anyway. You can pick them up fairly cheaply on eBay. Probably around $40-$60 at a guess.

    • Also struggling to understand how a low power device will be able to emit a strong enough signal/wave for to enable SpO2.

1st post since 2012, this one must be special to you 😀

I'd actually been active in Mi Band 5 discussions before this.
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/551984

That discussion was before we knew that the Mi Band 5 NFC version did have the pulse oximeter hardware included, but not activated. We were exploring the AliExpress options back then. For some people, this talk about SpO2 hardware is not of interest. For myself, it is important.

    • $28.82 Shipping

    For a watch?

I'm assuming it'll be delivered in less than 45 minutes or it's free.

  • Wow that seems expensive

  • Expensive, not a bargain

  • NFC

u used this word 8 times in the post, may i know whats the use when u can do nothing with it? will any Australian bank support it?

    • might work with other xiaomi devices
also if you use NFC tags, it might have some use..

    • No, you can't use the NFC for payment in Australia. It works with UnionPass and QuickPay. But the NFC model has the pulse oximeter and the infrared heat monitoring.

      • Wasn't it advertised to work with Google pay?

        • I haven't seen anything about the Mi Bands and Google Pay. I'm skeptical.

That's a different model. It looks like the non-NFC Chinese model.

      • Am curious how are you so sure about

Chinese version having the sensor? Has it been proved via a teardown?

        And

How do you know a chinese non NFC version doesnt have it either?

I seriously considering getting the Honor band 5, but xiaomi has a better screen and supposed 8 hr sp02 monitoring

  • @op I paid $58 for mine from Kogan on Thursday, got it delivered on Monday. Not sure why this is a bargain …

    • Kogan is selling the Global version, which is a different model. The Global version can't ever be updated to measure blood oxygen levels.

  • I agree with the others, at almost $100 for a Xiaomi Mi Band 5 is damn expensive, when I saw the shipping fee, just wow! How could this be a bargain? There have been a lot of craps posted on OzBargain as bargain but this one takes the cake.

    • Kogan has been selling the Global version (no SpO2 sensor) at prices ranging from $62 to $90. The NFC unit described in this post is a better device. I got 2 of the NFC Mi Band 5s for around $160, which ends up at around $80 each. I think it compares very favourably.

      • How do i know if it's a global version? it doesn't state it - just that it's an "import".

I personally would never use the oxgyen functions, due to battery and also if I am feeling unwell - i personally wouldn't be relying on the Mi band …

A family member has a dedicated oxygen reader placed on the finger tip and when they were unwell it was like 97% and compared to my reading at 99% …

        • A pulse oximeter, in conjunction with a motion detector monitoring your sleep patterns, could potentially alert you if you are developing sleep apnoea.

Re Global version: As I write this, there are three Mi Band 5 models being sold. A Chinese domestic model with no NFC. A Chinese domestic model with NFC. And a Global version that has no NFC. Usually, the online shopping sites say which version.

I'm going for the NFC model because it has the SpO2 sensor, not because of the NFC chip that gives it its name.

  • Might worth it if you are planning to go China and use the XIAOMI pay

  • +1

This isn't a deal who pays that much for postage

    • who pays that much for postage

Someone who really wants the item. :-)

  • No point in owing the NFC version for payments in Australia.

  • $53.99 now

Economy shipping is $9.90. It says it cannot contain batteries. Does that include embedded rechargeable ones?
