Dell XPS 13 2020 Entry Model Twice The Price in Australia Compared to The US

Looking at getting the XPS 13 2020 but the base model in Australia is twice that of the US, the Australian base model is better spec'd than the US. I'll mostly be using it for web browsing and watching videos so the extra performance is lost on me.

Seems to almost be two completely different offerings :/

Any suggestions for Macbook air-esque windows laptops appreciated.

If you're mostly web browsing and watching videos, I would recommend an iPad. It is cheaper than a decent laptop, has a great screen, speakers and battery life (which sadly cannot be guaranteed in cheaper laptops), have a multitude of video/entertainment apps, has a great web browsing experience (I find reading on an iPad is much easier than on my laptop) and will last you a long time. I think the iPad Pro is worth it for the 120hz screen and quad speakers, as they will contribute to a much better browsing and entertainment experience respectively. However there are cheaper iPads available.
However iPads still cannot fully replace a laptop, especially if you're doing a lot of multi-tasking (like 3 Word documents open with 2 other software side-by-side). Also, if typing is important you'll need to buy the keyboard case for the iPad, which isn't cheap. So if productivity is really important to you, a laptop might just be a better choice.

US equivalent of the base AU model is $1,249.99 USD which is approx. $1926AUD inc GST. The AU model cost is $2,798.98AUD.

So, yes, we seem to be paying over $800 more that the same model in the US. What a freaking rip off! :(

  • I was just thinking about this. Can you not use a freight forwarding service like AusPost's Shopmate which helps you purchase items from USA and sends them to you in Australia? I've never used Shopmate but assuming the XPS box weighs like 4kg it shouldn't cost too much. According to their website Shopmate charges flat $22.95 for a parcel, plus $4.95 per 500g to Australia so $22.95 + $40 (4kg) = $62.95 AUD to forward to Australia?

Like I said I've never used it before so they probably have hidden fees like conversion and service charges but how bad could they be? $50-100?
If it costs that much then you can have your XPS bought from a US online store for the US price + shopmate's service and postage fees and save $550-650.

There are cheaper alternatives too like Shipito which is a Shopmate competitor and is cheaper but I'm not sure on reliability. I've never done this before so I'd be more inclined to trust Shopmate which is operated by AusPost.

Dell US wont ship to a freight forwarder. You need to buy from a retailer like amazon, that will ship to a freight forwarder.

      they probably have hidden fees

Freight forwarders now charge GST (which supposedly is sent to the ATO). You might also have to pay US sales tax on top of the price listed (depending on the frieght forwarders location). Shipping Insurance also eats into the savings.

After all of those things, you can still come out ahead.

While the Dell XPS line are very good, I would pass as your usage is not going to use the extra power of the latest 10th gen processors. Why pay more for something that you won't use??

Look at some of the offerings from Asus and Lenovo. The Zenbook line from Asus are good value and are well liked from the OZbargainers out there. Might not have the build of the Dell XPS or the Apple Macbooks but they do cost a considerable amount less.

May I make a suggestion. Don't support companies that rip us off that badly. You may have to make a small sacrifice, but at least you're not giving money to a company that doesn't give a shit about you to the point where they make you pay thorough the nose for their product "Just Because"

  • The US base model is complete junk, 4gb of ram, useless. I prefer Lenovo though

  • Have been looking at the Dell XPS 13 myself with 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD - $2,803.99 is a steep price..

What do people think of these as cheaper XPS alternatives:

    • Better value but not as pretty as the new bezel :(
