Your Rocket League Rank in 2020

Out of sheer curiosity for those who regularly play Rocket League, have you noticed a difference in your rank or the ability of players in your rank this year?

I started this current competitive season by finally breaking into Diamond 1 after three seasons stuck in Platinum, but as lockdown commenced and (I assume) more people had time to play more regularly, I found that my rank would plummet. I'm now barely holding on to Plat 1, but feel the quality of the people I'm playing against is almost the same as when I was fairly comfortably maintaining Diamond.

I did take a few weeks away from the game due to the frustration of losing constantly, but even as I've returned I'm finding I'm losing way more than winning - even in casual.

  • I hadn't played it in a long while, but I tried it out again last month and found the matchmaking pretty poor.

Half of my matches were ok, two teams of newbies playing ball, but the other half my team were stacked against teams of 3 advanced players (with the same code in their names) scoring tons of goals while we barely got to hit the ball. I looked up some youtube videos on how to play better, and that was actually what made me realise how unfair the matches were - I was able to recognise the moves I was trying to learn being used frequently by the enemy team but not my own.

In the end I just quit because I have a lot of other games to play and my friends don't own the game either.
So I've no idea about the higher ranks where you are, but I can tell you beginner's matchmaking was questionable.

You've probably just come up against smurfs. Even in my middle-of-the-road rank I still come up against players in casual (and ranked) using secondary accounts just to squash people worse than they are at the game.

It definitely ruins the fun for new players

      • People buy multiple copies in order to smurf? That's pretty lame. I bet it will get a lot worse when it goes F2P in the future.

I think Rocket League in particular is terrible for smurfing because not only do you lose the game but you don't actually get to play in it, because you don't get to hit the ball much. The better players just keep the ball away from you so you don't even get to have fun during the game. Losing against other noobs was fine because I could kick the ball around and try to shoot goals. But against the better players I was basically just driving in circles so there was no point in playing anymore.

I hope they fix the matchmaking in future, especially for higher ranked players like you who have invested a lot of time into the game.

        • Console players can just make new user accounts on the same console and play the same game - overwatch has the same problem.

          • @zigzagoonmemes: With rocket league going F2P soon smurfing might be made even easier

  • Just started playing again literally yesterday after not playing for a couple years, so im only gold 3 after the placement matches, just changed my button mapping so have to relearn that now and gonna see how i go.

    • I basically just ranked down back to Gold 3 after a few games and I've been fairly consistently playing for nearly three years 😅

Makes me feel like my investment of 980 hours (according to my switch) is pretty futile when you look at it from a competitive/compatible standpoint.

      • I do have 847 hours on PC and probably a few hundred on PS4 from before PC sadly as well haha

  • Keep in mind kids also had lots of time off school (incl. tertiary education) + school holidays to play and get better. Considering the majority of players are school/tertiary-aged kids you would expect to face tougher match ups against these "better players". Just my 2c.

    • I get that. Just insane. I've grinded away nearly 1000 hours in game and have consistently improved over the last year, yet my current rank is actually lower than where I was last year as a result of the influx of these seemingly more skilled players.

      • Also nearing end of season, which is notorious for an influx of smurfs

I wish there was a better system to combat smurfing. Once this goes F2P I imagine smurfs will be everywhere when people get the game on multiple platforms

  • Currently Champ 2 Div 4 in 3's, Champ 1 Div 3 in 2's, only diamond 1 in 1's. I don't play as much as I used to, only now and then. I find the quality of matches are better before 3pm and late at night since the kids are at school or sleeping. In general i feel worse players have gotten higher ranks and you have to play even better to carry them since it's just so coinflip every game.

  • I'm somehow C3 in 2s and 3s (and rumble). Mechanically I'm terrible. Think I'm around D1 in 1s.

    • What do you play on? And how many hours?

      • PC mostly, little bit of Xbox. Around 1200 hours probably?

        • Damn. I feel so far behind 😞

  • I feel ya, have tilted from c2d4 in both 2s/3s down to d3 this season. Been hardstuck in c1/c2 for a few seasons now, not motivated to really grind. Around 1.7k hours
