  • Using 9100f, not bad for the price.

  • 9700k seems to go down to $521.9 - tempting

    • +4

Get 10th gen if you're in the market for an Intel CPU, the 9700K is pretty crap with only 8 threads.

      • Except if you are an upgrader - if your current MB is based on z370 (I myself have an evga z370 with a crappy 8100 cpu..), then a 9700k is very compelling.

This thing can easily do 5Ghz on 1.3v and blow most current cpus out of the water in gaming scenarios.

        • Makes sense if you already have a compatible board, but buying a Z390 board and a 9700K is silly when you could get a Z490 board and a 10600K. Quite a shame Intel only enabled HT on their i9s for 9th gen.

          • @Void: So, to summarise the current state of affairs (my view is):

            1. If you already have a z370 or z390 mb (or if you can procure a cheap z370 for less than $150) -> i7 9700k

            2. If you are considering a new build -> go AMD or splurge on z490+10600k

    • Make it $350 or lower and maybe it worths that

      • $350 would make it competitive for new builds (AMD is more cost effective for new builds)

  • at this price i think amd is hard to come up with a competition? for extreme budget gaming.

    • i7 4770

  • Didn't expect to be tempted by an Intel CPU… $92.65 for 9100F…
EDIT: Any cheap boards to go with this cheap CPU? Otherwise hard to justify…

    • 99 from msy for a h310

      • Need a GPU to go with 9100F.

        • That's what makes the 9100f a bad buy. 4 core no hyperthreading isn't a good cpu for gaming.

          • @Rauland: Not all games make effective use of multi core.

            Multi threading effect on gaming
is even more questionable (ie. search for 9700k vs 9900k reviews and you'll find out) so I believe 9100 should be good for most games.

            • @pwrusr-com: What may be true for higher core parts isn't for lower core parts. Consoles only use about 6 cores for games, hence 9700k vs 9900k doesn't matter. But for low core parts, hyperthreading is crucial.

As summarised here on hardware unboxed. https://youtu.be/aJhtmsohbw4?t=660

It's not worth the stutter to save a few bucks. Ryzen 3 3100/3300x or i3 10100 is actually enough for gaming. The 9100f was never a good buy.

              • +1

@Rauland: Very informative, thank you for the video. He's saying that 9100f is useless for gaming, is useless for office (because it lacks a gpu..) and is useless in general.

Also that If you're after a decent compromise solution, go for at least 6-core cpu.

Makes sense to me if you only consider present and future scenarios.

But for anyone looking for a seriously cheap computer, I believe it should still be usable and perhaps not as bad as presented (that is not to say I'd buy a 9100f cpu - I agree that 6 cores cpu is where you could extract the most value).

        • This recent review from https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/best-gpus,4380.htm states that the geforce 1650 super and the rx 5600 xt give you the best fps/$
