(Solved) Car Insurance During COVID-19, Should I Switch To Third Party?

Happy Monday all.

I have got a pajero sport 2018. I had been covered by RACV Comprehensive. Now it is time to renew.

Just wondering should I consider getting a Third-Party to save money during this COVID situation? The car is mostly kept in either garage or 2km away supermarket car park.

Cheers

  • Thanks all for comments. Forgot to mention that I'm in Melbourne.

I believe this lockdown is tempery. Better to buy the comprehensive to get fully covered.

Can you afford to replace it if its stolen from your garage, or an uninsured driver crashes into you on the way to the shops?

    • I thought third party covers stolen?

That's if you get Third Party Fire & Theft, not Third Party Property

Can you afford to pay for a new car outright if you miscalculate and write off your own vehicle? Or would a $1000 excess and a brand new car in the event of a mistake be preferable? It depends on your risk appetite, accidents are unpredictable, and that's not a cheap runaround! Try a cheaper fully comp insurer rather than a premium insurer for fully comp.

If yes, then 'self insure) for your potential losses. If not, then the difference between third party and fully comp will be worth it, and at MY18 you can still get new for old if it does get totaled.

    • True, thanks for the advice. Time to renew.

  • what if something happens when you are doing your weekly grocery run ?

  • Sell your Pajero and buy a cheap runabout that you won't mind losing if it gets stolen (which it must probably won't if it's cheap) or that you won't mind being written off in an accident. You will also have the advantage of not caring about scratches, you will never need to wash your car again, will be able to fit in tighter parking spots, etc. It's just another responsibility having a car - sounds like you don't need that considering you don't use it much.

    • Just because of COVID-19 bro. Bought it new in 2018, now it is around 30,000 kms.

      • Sorry, I thought you were after a permanent solution, not a temporary one.

Insurance is one of those things that you don't need, until you need it.

  • Try Ubicar for a quote, the per km policy they have (otherwise their other telemetric insurance plan), you can reduce your premium quite a lot.

Other than that, get a quote from IAG's new product, Poncho. 30% off during this COVID thing, and no extra to pay monthly, plus you can have several cars per account, which is very nice.

Don’t forget if an uninsured driver Hts you and writes off your car then third party won’t help - except some policies cover for up to $5k-ish.

You can control your own driving, but not others.

$35,000 vehicle and you are worried about $1000 of comprehensive insurance premiums? /shakes head in wonder

Are you under finance? If so, you must have compulsory insurance
