nbn Feed in Line Damaged

Hey Guys,

The other week I went onto my roof to clean my evaporative cooler and to replace all the filters. Great I thought, job done.. I decided to take a look around the front of my house (Whilst on roof). I noted the feed in cables to the house.. The Optus Cable, Foxtel cable & then, to my demise I noticed the Telstra phone line cable with what looked to be damaged done to it..

Upon a closer look I could see that it appearws as though it had been shreaded exposing the the thing copper wire. It looks as though its gone practically right through & the only thing keeping the copper feed in line hagng in the air is the steel wire (Also exposed). the copper itself looks quite tarnished and you can easily tell its been like this for quite some time.

My property is targeted for FTTC NBN, sadly that means this cable run will be used. I've only owned the properly for three years & never used the copper 2 pair phone line as I have used my Optus Cable for that instead. if I where to hazard a guess, i'd say either 1 of 2 things has happened. A large branch has fallen on the cable causing damage Or (And more likely) somene has pruned a substantial amount of tree branches around the feed in cables, and in the process has nicked this cable, thus causing this damage

Based on where the phone point is in the house and the fact Optus & Foxtel cable Feed ins were both there before I acquired the premise, I'd say the previous owner was not using this phone line either. Infact I know they weren't as I made some enquiries through the Real Estate firm about what Internet they had on the premise before securing the property (They were using Optus Cable).

The previous owner provided me a large folder for paperwork to the house (Appliances etc). In this book I noted there was Prune back order issued by Ausnet (Dated just over 4 years ago) to clear branches at the front from the feed in lines to the premise. This is why I suspect that pruning of the area caused this line to get damaged.

Obvious I am concerned as to what will happen once I eventually cut over to FTTC NBN. Should I inform the Provider/NBN of this damage or just act ignorant? when I book to be connected? Also, and more of a concern, will I have to pay for a new Lead in to the premise?

Well it's up to NBN to do the repair. There is a thread about it.

You are not authorised to replace or repair that cable. It is on the nbn side of the network boundary, it belongs to nbnco, and it is up to nbnco to replace it for free. You should tell your service provider of the damaged feed in cable when you sign up to nbn, so they can tell nbnco to arrange repair.

  • The subby will install a new lead-in cable if the existing one cut. They make more money this way.

  • What everyone said is correct, but I will add my experience. My aerial lead-in was also damaged, but when I got my NBN FTTC connected, it actually worked fine. However, whenever it rained, I'd lose connection, once it stopped raining it would eventually come back. This was the problem with trying to get a tech out (NBN checks showed it was fine) it eventually took it completely being out for a week that NBN took notice and replaced it.

Your ISP can really help with pushing back to NBN, Aussie Broadband refused to close the incident. When the tech came out, he took one look at the line and said "Oh my god".

This is what it looked like before

    And This was after.

So just hope that it is completely not working, NBN will need to install a new one

    • Thanks for posting. It looks as though in the 2nd photo they didn't replace the lead in.. Or am I mistaken?

      • It was a full replace, the photo doesn't really show it, but the line looks a bit shinier. Basically, they cut the old line and tape it to the new line, then pull it over to the pole and connect the new line there, then connect it to the house. The team that came out were really good.
