iPad - New / Refurb

Frustratingly, our local primary school requires each student to have an ipad for a significant portion of the school work. To date my son has broken two in spite of "life-proof" cases and our best instruction.

To have this repaired by Apple will cost almost the same as a replacement. We want to go cheaper or second hand for future purchases, so that inevitable breakage will be less painful. Looking on Gumtree / Facebook, and second hand ipads seem to cost roughly the same as refurbs through the likes of Kogan. Since refurbs have a warranty and likely in better condition, that seems the direction.

Does anyone have a recommendation? Or is Kogan / Dick Smith the way to go?

    • Plus an Otterbox case

      • And a bit of a lesson such as keeping them at bay from their favourites (Birthday gift Nintendo)

    Son has broken two already?

Next one is his birthday present.
The next one is his Christmas present.

It's not the cost of the iPad that is the issue. It's your son's lack of appreciating these expensive items given to him.

I have 3 kids under 9. All of them need iPads. Only one iPad has been broken, and wouldn't you know it as soon as I said there were no more replacements (only "presents") not a single device has been broken since.

    • Why do kids under 9 need iPads lol.

To answer your question op, gumtree, I have got a few new and used for half retail or more. Still not cheap if they are going to drop them.

I agree, however a lot of schools require them these days.

        • Public or private schools? Seriously question.

          • @SF3: Either, really. Public schools can’t really force families to buy them, but if they are recommended for learning, they will often provide (old) ones to students on loan.

            • @jjjaar: Public here.
From pre primary we were "strongly encouraged" to get one. By year 1/2 nearly every kid in the class had one. By year 4 it's at the point where a lot of their work is on it.
The school have older ipads in very limited numbers, that I've been informed are meant to be for the economically disadvantaged. When we originally refused to buy one, the school ipads used in the class were shared between 3-4 kids.

They're good as tools. Im not against the use of technology like this in class and kids having their own personal devices. I am a bit sore that they picked Apple though. So expensive, and you can only use their parental controls if you have another ios device to act as the parent device

      • Umm… Reading Eggs?!? Mathletics?!?

        They start that at Kindergarten/Pre-School.

At first I hated the idea of having a 4/5yo using a device, but iPad's are so damn intuitive… they picked it up instantly.
And no, they don't have unrestricted access. Occasionally on weekends for age appropriate games, otherwise its 'strictly business'.

Like it or not, they NEED to know devices. Old school thinking isn't going to get them anywhere.

        • I don't know if this has been your experience, but in our school's case the kids effectively self-manage their devices. They carry them everywhere, or stuff them in their bag. We have to sign away all accountability of the school to keep the devices safe.

Kids are going to be kids. And with how many of them demonstrate risky behaviours with their devices, and how many have them, it's no wonder they get broken.

I would like to see schools offer an insurance option. Reckon it would be expensive though
