Rider P1 pre-provisional rider training course + P1 test

Has anyone done the P1 test recently? And/or the pre-provisional course?

I'm doing mine tomorrow and I'm a little concerned about it but also it's supposed to be dumping 100mm of rain and the testing centre is about an hr ride for me so… it's gonna be a wet one. How much of the course is outside, on bike?

Edit: course in NSW

Probably helps if you say what state you're from …

    • True! Apologies. It's in NSW.

  • Will you be riding in the wet in real life?

    • From time to time, yes?

      • Then prove to yourself you can ride in really wet conditions. It will do wonders for your confidence. Just avoid painted lines. Good luck.

I think you misunderstood… I've ridden plenty in the wet already, that's not the main issue here! Just a side story haha. I was mainly wondering about the day/test itself.

    70%
There's some classroom component, which probably will be under cover

To help ease your nerves … read this, and this
A last minute advice - do not look down at the road - look ahead where you are going.
And head checks head checks head checks

    • Bugger! Gonna be a long, wet day… hopefully not too cold.

Thanks for the link, that's relieving - I've done a decent amount of riding but with COVID-19, I haven't really done any 'practice' per se as I haven't had a need to go anywhere.

      Fingers crossed.

  • The learner test is much harder than the P test. The pre-P is just a bit of riding about in a group.

    Don't stress too much.

It's going to be allright jrowls.
You can come back this time tomorrow and tell us how easy it was and there really was no point stressing over it
The rain can be an unsatisfactory variable, but as you admitted, you'd be riding in the rain later on….
an hour to the testing centre … must be country NSW ?

    • Thanks mate, appreciate it and I hope so! Will comment back here saying if I passed haha.

Nah, not country NSW - Illawarra, there's only one testing centre and it's at the other end of the region, add in morning traffic and 90km/h on the highway and I'll be lucky to get there in an hour.

      @51ngh, passed! Was pretty easy.

Definitely not worth stressing over but it was a little tricky and I wouldn't recommend anyone doing it on a bigger bike than a small sportsbike (i.e. a 300 like mine). Not to say that you couldn't, but you're making it harder for yourself.

Was a bugger of a day in the wet, I was soaked and freezing all day, absolutely knackered this evening, but she's done.

  • There will be a group ride and depending on your test location, you'll either be doing the MOST in the rain or undercover.

I did mine late last year, it was all outdoor (excluding 20% in the room going over some stuff). Our instructor had us practising the MOST sections separately for a bit, then had a break, followed by group ride around the local area.

When it came to the actual test, everyone passed. The instructor had us doing tighter turns etc than required, so the test was easier than the practice.

The rain will affect your riding a bit, but as long as you're aware of that, you should be fine. All the MOST testing is at 25km/h or slower, so no high-speed issues with breaking.

    Good luck!

Also, don't be late - make sure to arrive 15 mins before you're supposed to start, or plan to.

  • Make sure you wear your wet weather gear, from neck to toes, nothing worse than shivering through a riding test. Seen not bad riders fail from the simplest things because they were freezing their nads off. Also, make sure its comfortable, not skin tight ladies jeans.

I was pretty warm and dry except my feet! They were soaked from the commute, going through torrential rain and massive puddles. Freezing all day.

Only advice I have is use a light bike, as you have to do some tight turns at low speed and a heavy bike would just fall over. Light bike is also easier for the brake test (riding towards a line at a certain speed and having to brake and not go over the line but not stop too far away from it too).
If you have been getting lots of practice on the same bike you'll use for the test you shouldn't have any problem even with the rain. I think the only people that fail are the ones that never got their own bike and had to borrow bikes to practice, and then used an unfamiliar bike in the test.
Oh one more piece of advice, when I did my test about ten years ago one of the other testees applied both front and rear brake while going through a turn on the group ride and the bike slid out from under her and she took a bad dive. I imagine the risk of this is higher in the rain. If you can, slow down before the turn and don't apply your brakes during the turn.
    Good luck!!!
