Hilarious Gumtree Scam

Selling an iPad mini on Gumtree and their ‘wife’ contacts me asking for my email because her husband is working and wants it which I thought was odd 🤣🤣 but I went along with it to see what this was about and… I get this after a few emails. Now it’s turned into their son wanting it bahahaha

Due to climate change, Texas is currently suffering from a tablet and phone famine.

They are paying top dollar for relief, especially for Australian stock as it is perceived as less likely to have hormone and chemical additives.

Ask them to send you some top shelf jambalaya first.

People will still fall for it

  • I sometimes humour them and go along with it for a bit of fun. Funny what they come up with. Though people do fall for scams like these all the time unfortunately.

    • Yeah I heard on the radio yesterday that over $2mill AUD has been lost to Rona scams already. People be laughably gullible

whenever anyone on gumtree asks for an email or states there are some issues, just report them.

Also be wary of people asking you to meet at a public place at night.
i had someone wanting to meet at mcdonalds, I parked across the road and told them im here. No one responded after 5 mins and I left.

Also prefer to meet them in front of a block of units, that way they dont know where you exactly live

I have meet plenty of people at McDonald’s to sell stuff, often at night because they were not available during the day, without incident. I always meet them inside the restaurant though.

Not always a scam. When I was looking at cars, I asked a few people to send some pics by email as the gumtree site compresses the photos so much you can't make out any details. I did get one guy saying he didn't want to get scammed after I asked though. The rest were fine with it. The chances of you getting scammed are pretty low anyway. People are so worried about it after just a few bad incidents.

if anyone on gumtree asks you for an email, its most likely a scam lol
there should be no reason they can't just message you through the platform

    • Yup Lol I wanted $500 for it originally and postage by express is like $40-50 max and he was offering me $650 with postage hah

      ‘Via PayPal too’ lovely

      • Send him a brick after receiving PayPal payment.

No. Don't really, that would be expensive.

        • I don't understand how they are scamming you at this point? What can they do with your PayPal address?

          • @tbgoose: Can complain item never received and get a PayPal refund, can do a charge back, but most likely will just take a PayPal confirmation screenshot. Also, could be a hacked PayPal account where the charges will be reversed when the real owner sees the transfer.

            Many options.

Cash, gumtree, cash, gumtree, that's the mantra.

    Can I have your email?

      Sure.
Please send me your email and I will respond. I promise … really …

      ;-p

  • Isnt gumtree like 40-50% people trying to pulling off scams these days?

    • I think if you’re selling a phone or tablet almost everyone that contacts you is a scammer, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of genuine buyers for those type of items anymore.

      • That's a way over the top comment. I have bought and sold 50 plus iphones/ipads off gumtree never had a problem. Sure there is some nutters but plenty of genuine buyers.

      • Try facebook marketplace.

I'll say there are more nutters and morons than scammers.

Including all those queries during their "toilet break" times: Is this available? No, I just like to converse with people!

      • People ask if it's still available because 1. it's the default pre-filled question, and 2. Because loads of people don't bother taking down their listing after they've sold the thing.
