FTTC Install - 3 Core Overhead Cabling

Hey Guys,

This coming Monday I am getting FTTC connected to my premise. Just got a few queries hopefully some knowledgeable folk on here can answer.

  • Does VDSL2 use 1 or 2 pair? I beleive it is one, seeing (For Example) with overhead phone cabling into a premise for houses
on my street at least, it is only a 3 core untwisted cable. one of the cores is used to tie off at a mount
point to the house in order to hold the cable up in the air.

  • The internal wiring for the 2 core cable coming into the premise needs to be relocated to another position (Same location as where my Optus Cable connection currently resides). However, whilst visually checking under the house, the run is to short to simply reposition it. The 2 core cable wire gauge is substantially thicker than the cat3/6 cable.. I am curious how they actually make a solid join on this cable in a situation like mine where they need to extend it? First thing that comes to mind is that they will use my old socket (I believe its called a 610 socket) & then run another point for FTTC from there using cat3/6 cabling.

Sadly the 2 core cable going into the house from the street goes to the middle of the house. Since its not twisted at all, I guess it would be much more susceptible to EMF.

If the technician run a totally new connection, would they use the same untwisted 2 core (Well actually 3 core as per first point above) to the premise or would they actually use something better than this for overhead cabling? If the latter, I might offer the NBN technician a cash incentive to do a new run… Would anyone actually know?

    • 1 pair of a 2 pair cable
    • doubt the technician would be willing to move it. if they do they can just make a joint under the house and seal it with a snot block (think it's called that) or install a madison box and attach it somewhere nearby.
    • they're all untwisted I'm pretty sure
    • +1

+1. They will just connect you using the existing outlet unless they deem it not suitable. You will need to get someone in to move it. The third "cable" is just a steel cable.

  • The civil team will install a new LiC to your power box. They make more this way. The only time they won't is when there is no access to the sidewall.
