Best Marketplace to Sell a Car / Anything to Watch out for?

Hi,

I'm selling a car for my parents as they are moving interstate. Its a 2015 car, mechanically sound and it's quite immaculate.

Where is the best place to sell a car? I've started with facebook. Should I do gumtree as I heard stories about dodgy sellers. How about car sales - Is it worth paying the fees? If yes, which one I should go for? Standard / Premium / Ultimate?

What should I watch out for if someone bought the car?

What is the best payment method? I will certainly not accept paypal! Is cash or bank cheque acceptable?

Thanks for your input in advance!

Edit:
Car is a Mazda 3 Maxx

Thanks everyone for the input. Great idea to get it cleaned inside out. The exterior is quite clean as it just got washed recently. But I will do a bit more on the inside as there are speckles of dust in the photos. Then I will post it on carsales. Agreed that the standard price is not that much if it attracted more quality buyers.

  • 2015 car. What, roughly, is it worth? There’s a big difference between a base model hatchback and a premium SUV. No point paying premium marketing rates for a base model.

What ever you try you’ll likely get some scammers contact you. Only take pick up in person, don’t entertain ‘couriers’ that will pick up on behalf of a FIFO worker or any form of payment other than cash or bank transfer.

    • Its Mazda 3 Maxx, I think it's a standard. Looks like it ranges from 15k - 17k.

      • No point paying for premium then. Plenty of people looking for Mazda 3’s

        • Yeah looks like it's quite popular and there are not that many in the market (around 25 or so in NSW). Thanks for the input

The marketplace is half of it. Writing a decent ad, pricing the car right and spending time detailing it make a big difference.

For a 2015 car, paying for an ad is a small outlay. People are on carsales just to look at cars unlike the other sites.

    Carsales

Photos, lots of photos, in focus, of a clean car.

    Be honest about everything.

If you want a quick sale, price it correctly. DO NOT mention it's negotiable. DO NOT mention it's a rush sale.

When someone comes to test drive, take a photo of their licence before they drive. NEVER leave them alone in / with the car (even when swapping seats. they get out first and get in last).

Never release the car until you have the money, cleared.

Generally FB and Scumtree attract tyre kickers and more time wasters.

  • Won't hurt to list it free on Gumtree in addition to having it on CarSales or elsewhere. You will get enquiries from both.

Just go Car Sales. Price it for the market and take some good pictures inside and out. Steering wheel straight, car cleaned and detailed if possible and put in a good description. Roadworth with it ideal or at least get it ready for one as they only last a month I think. Someone want so come in a buy it there on the spot.

What is the car? If you put it on carsales, for the love of god, please write your own ad, and don't use that crappy carsales template they make up.

    • This!

Check out how much a dealer will give you (it’ll be a lot less than selling private but just to get an idea)

  • I did Carsales recently it was ok.

I got the car serviced and told them I wanted to sell so make sure there nothing to ding the price if inspected by a mechanic. Stuff you cope with when it is yours will be picked up by a mechanic and could prevent registration.

Car detailed and deodorised. Fixed all the various rattles you get in the interior. Be prepared to sell the car. Figure out who is wearing the pants and who carry the wallet in a couple.

Don't let the car go without you in the back. If you are paranoid stick an ipad with a sim in the backpocket of the car Incase you are turfed out. You hear of stories where things go missing (eg log books, manuals, DVD navigation disks). Definitely keep the log book separately.

Doing the cash exchange can be awkward as neither party will want to take the risk. If it is a fair bit of cash maybe open an account with buyers bank and do a transfer in branch. Avoid weekend exchanges as banks don't process things over the weekend.

    • Thanks.

Is bank transfer quite safe? As long as the money is cleared (ie i can transfer to another account), there is no way for the buyer to reverse it, correct?

Just a question, if I got the person's driver license and confirming the face etc, it is less likely that he would commit fraud right because it can be tracked?

I'd do it in the bank in a weekday.

Drivers licence etc just reduce the risk but not 0 it out. Could always ask the bank to cash you out - but normally need an appointment to get more than $10k in cash.

      • Ah yeah i remembered this. So no cash for sure.

Between individuals it is fine to do more than $10k…
