4k Monitor Options with a Budget around $400-$450

I have ordered a new computer (https://techfast.com.au/products/core-i7-10700-rtx-2080-supe…) with some pretty good specs. I'll be using it for a whole range of things - mostly for video editing, photoshop, work and gaming.

I am looking at getting a new 4k monitor and am considering my options. My budget is around $400-450.

Given that I'm no expert with monitors (first-time buyer) I would love some recommendations as to what I should purchase. My current monitor (gifted to me) is 27" so I probably wouldn't want anything smaller.

I found this monitor online through Dick Smith and I would like some opinions as to whether it'd be worth considering. It's only $349 + delivery: https://www.dicksmith.com.au/da/buy/kogan-28-ultra-hd-4k-fre…

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!

  • You'll want something at least 30" big…40" is probably ideal for that resolution size.

    • Thank you for the suggestions, I am looking for 4k only though.

      • Why 4K only? It's going to suck for gaming. Have you considered a 144hz QHD?

        • I see, is that the case? I thought I'd heard otherwise, but is that perhaps dependent on other factors? Thanks for helping, I'm not the best in this field haha.

  • So you've ordered a $2400 top of the line gaming PC and you want to view it through a bargain basement 4K monitor.

Have a look at this video to get an idea of the quality difference between what you're suggesting and what you should get. Yes I know 4K =/= HDR but the theory is the same.

I mean, if you look at this list of 60 monitors, there's 1 below your price range and 59 above.

Thanks for the insight. Probably worth me saving a bit more then.

  • You are really pushing the budget if you want 4k for gaming. What sort of games? Fast paced FPS or slower things like strategy?

    • More so fast-paced FPS.

  • If you're going to get the most from a 4k monitor, you need to run it at 100% display scaling.

I use a 32" 4k monitor for work at 100% scaling and most people tell me text is too small (it is very small, but it's fine for me though). So that would be the smallest size I would consider for a 4k monitor.

If you get smaller & then use display scaling to make things big enough to read, you might as well have a cheaper lower resolution monitor.

    • Thanks for the tip! Any chance you'd be able to give an example of how small the text is, for example?

      • Unfortunately I'm not in the office today… Maybe will be back there next week & can take a photo…

        • Thanks heaps! I'm in no rush to get the monitor since the computer won't arrive for another 2 weeks. And plus I want to make sure I make the right choice etc.

  • look on dell outlet .. just got a "Dell UltraSharp 32 4K USB-C Monitor: U3219Q" for $800

    • Cool. That's 47% off. Was it refurbished or as new?

      • refurb with 3 year warranty

That’s very cheap! I saw the ‘as new’ model for $949 earlier tonight.
