FB Reads WhatsApp Messages?

Does FB read your Whatsapp messages?

I was discussing airtasker with someone, didn't go on the website or anything, then suddenly there are airtasker ads on my FB feed.

Yes, WhatsApp is owned by Facebook.

    Everyone's reading everything.

Went to a Kia yard one day recently, that night got Kia ads.

    • To be fair, this is could be based off location services sharing or whatever, but yes it's creepy as how social media targeting works.

Facebook is always listening, some guy tested it ages ago. I get targeted ads about things I talk about all the time. Never searched for it. Just had my phone in my pocket while chatting about random things.

If something is free, you are the product.
Of course they are getting data from your conversations. Do you have any idea how expensive it is to manage the world's most popular messaging app.
Before I deleted my FB account, I hadn't given FB my mobile number and didn't use the FB app on my phone. Every time I opened FB on my PC, there would be a request for my mobile number "for security purposes". Every. Single. Time.

At least according to WhatsApp, it should not be possible for Facebook to read your messages:

It's Facebook for goodness sake. Mark "Our users are dumb f#cks" Zuckerberg hates you and has been handing over your data to 3rd-party advertisers, the US Federal Government, Intelligence Agencies, China and any and every Orwellian control freak entity that asks him for it, since FB's inception.

Facebook was founded with the help of CIA seed money from investors that had direct relationships with infamous CIA front company In-Q-Tel.

As grasspun already stated, if something is free, you are the product.

The very concept of "social media" is merely a marketing pitch for the Bush administration era concept of a "Total Information Awareness Office", a database of every single person's entire life history and most personal information, updated-to-the-minute and readily accessible by any governmental branches; something so ridiculously and blatantly over-the-top in its dystopian/Orwellian connotations that they quietly and facetiously discontinued that project and then decided to achieve those vary same goals through private corporations that are unaccountable to the public, which is why Silicon Valley has amassed the level of power it wields today.

  • Wow, thanks so much for giving us Facebook and other things for free Mr Zuckerberg! It's so amazing that you can do this and still make billions of dollars, I wonder where that money comes from?

I just wish there was a "I already bought it" button

  • Signal.

  • Facebook suggests friends who are in the Whatsapp contact list. FB also notes "XXXX likes this post" where XXXX is a person recently chatted to on Whatsapp. Only started happening since FB bought Whatsapp in 2014.
