65" TV - Help Me Decide

Hi All,

I am in the market for a new 65inch TV with around $1500 budget (can push this up a little bit).

Ive been looking at the below but am in a bit of analysis paralysis.

TCL C715
LG UN7300
Samsung TU8000
Song X8000H

Also should I go to JB and ask for a deal or wait for next sale? (I'm WA based - would also prefer JB as I have decent amount of vouchers to use here)

Edit:
Am upgrading from a 42in 4k Samsung (cant remember the model) bought it about 3/4years ago, mainly use it for TV, streaming (Netflix etc) and the occasional PS4 gaming.

I ended up with (in 55) the TCL, but the Sony looked better but was out of budget. TCL looks fine though, depends I like the android os, and chromecast is clever although not perfect (no sound on 4k h.265 stream for instance if using ac3 containers)

J.B did have the TCL's on offer I think and they had the 8500G sony which is 1 year older but a little better technically than the 8000H which is their new base Model in Australia I think (but still impressive). Depends how long you'l keep it, what you're going to watch/use it for, and what you're upgrading from.

  • These days they are all pretty good and simply separated by quality and thus price. Figure out what you can afford and by the TV that is the closest to that amount.

  • I believe the Samsung TU8000 is the upgraded version of my NU8000 65". I can recommend the Samsung. The Game Mode really helps switching between normal TV and gaming. And the picture "smoothing" feature helps a lot with frame rates, etc.

If your PS4 is a Pro, Samsung TVs don't like it when the video output is set to automatic. The display flickers black as if the connection is not stable. It has to be set to 2160 YUV on the PS4 Pro. Anyway, plenty of info on the web on this.

You will find that actually Samsung has made things a bit worse each year for this line of models.

      As such NU8000 > RU8000 > TU8000.

I would not go for LG TVs at the moment. I'm sure the best smart LG TV still runs more slowly than a cheap smart TV from other popular brands, due to the WebOS operating system they use. I used to think slowness in their TVs was a past thing but regret it after buying a new 2020 LG TV. Their picture quality is good though but it cannot make up for the suffered experience due to slowness. I hope noone buys smart LG TVs until they fix this (e.g. switch to use another OS)

I'd like to also add that if the connection to LG server is down, none of the apps work (Netflix, Amazon Prime).

Just had a Sony 65X8000H delivered. It's pretty sweet. Quick snappy menu changes, nice clear panel, plenty Android TV Smart features, super easy guided setup. Don't like the stand at all but minor issue. Recommended.

  • Also in WA. Upgrading from Sony Bravia 44" - not sure of model, but bought in 2008!

I'm looking at the HiSense 65Q8….if you can wait a couple of months, you might see this set come down a little in price i.e. $1750 - $1850. Currently <$2K at TGG….I am fighting the urge to buy.

Doesn't seem to be much between current sets around the $1500 mark - buy with your eyes is fairly sound advice (but knowing what to look for as well)

If you can save and wait, getting the qdot you probably won't need another TV for 7-10 years.

I would prob go the TU8000 if I had to buy a set below $1500.

  • I ended up going with the TCL C715 - weren't too many reviews online as its a 2020 TV but the tech for the price was good, ive noticed the sharpness is a bit off but that's on default picture settings, I have slowly been playing with them to see what works best and have noticed a much better picture so am still tweaking these to see what works.

TCL also came with 3year warranty (all others were 1 year) tech is also good for the price range

    • Quantum Dot
    • Android TV
    • Dolby Atmos/Vision
    • 200 clear motion refresh rate (from the research I could find TCL typically like other brands double their refresh rate to the standard I could be wrong on this as most older models have 50hz refresh rate)

Overall I am pleased with the picture quality for the price.

    • price? from?

  • Paid just over $1500 which included a wall mount from JB- Hifi

I noticed the good guys have since advertised the TCL C815 for a similar price.
