Recommendation for a phone under 5.5"

Hi all, I'm looking to replace my 2 year old Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact which has been a great phone but the battery is showing its age now. I've been hanging out for the Pixel 4a but my handset earpiece died yesterday so I don't think I can wait too much longer.

Can anyone suggest a decent replacement?

  • 5.8" max, the closer to 5" the better, I don't use it for gaming or watching movies.
  • 128GB or 64GB + micro SD slot
  • Water / splash resistant
  • Preferably not Samsung

Cheers!

What's wrong with Samsung? The S10e seems to tick all your boxes and it's a great phone (I have one).

I'd have to say that Samsung has done Android correctly with One UI. It's not overly bloated and has many useful tweaks. I used to prefer stock Android and only bought phones that were close to it (Galaxy Nexus, then M8, Z3 Compact, 6P). Since using this phone I don't think I can go back to stock now.

    • I had Note 3, 4 and S7 as work phones and never warmed to their UI but if its improved a lot recently I'll check it out.

      • The change from TouchWiz UI to One UI is massive. I would never have recommended Samsung if they were still using it.

  • A few suggestions:

    • Google pixel 3A (for some reason Google has discontinued it) or the Pixel 4 price will reduced once the 5 is eventually released. Shame that the 4A hasn’t been announced officially… it would have been a killer mid range phone.
    • I know you said you prefer no Samsung but the Samsung Galaxy S10E is a good compact option and has most of what you want.
  • If battery was your only issue, try a factory reset. and reinstall only the apps you use. This worked for me. Dont forget to backup your data first.

I think this helps clear all the useless junk that accumulates on the phone over years of installing and uninstalling apps.

  • The Sony Xperia 10 II has a 6" screen so its a little past your requirement and its cameras aren't meant to be that great along with the SoC (Snapdragon 665).
    However, it has:

    • IP65/IP68 dust/water resistance (up to 1.5m for 30 mins)
    • Gorilla Glass 6 front and back
    • 21:9 aspect screen
    • Has the rare combination of a 3.5mm headphone jack and high quality wireless audio through AptX HD

It's an import handset (Sony mobile pulled out of Australia) but it can be had for almost $500 delivered on Google Shopping in blue, white, mint, or black.

May be worth hanging out for the Google Pixel 4A if possible though.

  • 2yo phone and already dying!? I'd be pissed!
