The Best 55" (or Larger) TVs Available, Preferably <1.5k and Focus on PQ

Obligatory long time reader, first time poster introduction.

Looking to help a relo pick up a TV that would be used
- primarily for movies
- in a room where reflection shouldn't be too much of an issue
- with existing external speakers (so sound quality is irrelevant)

Preference for a well-known brand.

Am willing to go for just a bit more than 1.5k if I know that the difference is worth it.

Brick and mortar shop is a must, no grey imports.

I also have access to JB and TGG commercial accounts should that change the equation.

Cheers in advance.

for a few dollars more the Sony X8500 65" is now $1,795 - perhaps the commercial accounts could help drop the price further?

Not sure if it's the same model, but it seems to be rated very poorly for movies due to the IPS panel having a low contrast ratio and lack of local dimming.

I haven't kept up with pricing (and I don't know what kind of discounts you can get with commercial accounts) but for movies I'd recommend an OLED TV if you can afford it.
If not, then a TV with a VA panel and lots of local dimming zones.
If not, then a TV with a VA panel and a high contrast ratio.

Basically, wouldn't recommend a TV with an IPS panel if movies are the primary use case

What about a 65" for movies and sport? this any good?

Depends on your budget. It's good, not amazing.

It's easy for enthusiasts to forget that not everyone into AV. An edge-lit LCD is more than good enough for the vast majority of people. They simply don't care about IPS vs VA vs OLED or local dimming vs edge lit.

You also need to take rtings reviews in context. They are comparing against the best available. That doesn't mean lower scoring devices are objectively wrong for every user.

Just saying I personally wouldn't recommend a TV with an IPS panel for that use case. Not saying it's wrong

OP seems to be looking for the best TV (within their budget) for movies in a space that doesn't have strong lighting for. IPS panels are noticeably grey rather than black in low light 🤗
