Financial Services Deals by Brokers

Seeing a few "deal" posts by brokers that aren't really deals (because you can get them yourself) but with a signature block in the deal half the size of the entire post, it made me wonder why it is that a broker is permitted to "take credit" and encourage people to contact them for a deal without declaring that you don't need to contact a broker. Is that really fair on other brokers who don't want to spam up OzBargain with their contacts? Shouldn't people be posting deals because they want to share the bargain, not to try and deceive other posters into giving them a financial advantage?

IMO if a deal can be obtained directly, brokers shouldn't be allowed to "take credit" and encourage you to contact them in the deal description.

  • For clarity, Deal Posting Guidelines: 3rd Party Sites. Sites like Cashrewards, Shopback, Beatthatflight, Brickhawk/LEGO deals etc often post as a 3rd party site as well as brokers (e.g. this latest one).

    • Thanks neil. Just to add that with Cashrewards, Shopback, etc I wouldn't give a second thought to what they do as the punter actually gets a direct benefit they cannot get directly. And with beatthatflight etc they usually post information the average punter wouldn't be able to easily hunt down because the GDS isn't something that they would have access to so unless it's a published sale it's totally unknown.

  • Definitely get the feeling they're using it as free advertising space in order to drum up a customer base. And yes, have been increasingly noticing them (even though i don't have or need a mortgage) definitely treading the fine line between a deal and spam. I'd imagine the mortgage market is getting crunched and the healthy commissions they were on are drying up which has pushed them onto Ozbargain to find others.

Personally I'm not against it if there's an actual deal that's exclusive to either that broker or to the broker channel, and it means the punter gets a benefit. It just gives me a bit of an eyeroll moment when I see brokers literally posting the same deal you can get from the bank (or a government program) and sticking their contact details all over it. I'd consider it tolerable if they also prominently declared that you could do it yourself and didn't have to go via them, but they aren't always doing so.
