Carbon Monoxide Detector

Yeah looking mainly for not just cheap but also reliable.

And if there is an asbestos checker detector I might need one too.
I found a $4.31 AUD carbon monoxide detector in aliexpress but it seems to cheap to be true so came to ask here if there was any way to verify it's legitimacy or accuracy.

  • Get a professional to come in and test for you. Why would you possibly risk your's and others health/life?

    • Even after a plumber comes and uses a proper CO tester on your heater etc, its a good idea to get a detector for your home as well as a long term indicator.

  • I would buy one that meets whatever Australian Standards is in place.

  • The first question is why do you think you need one? Do you have heating that is likely to lead to a build up? Most Australian houses leak like a sieve, it is America, and Europe, where they have good seals, and use boilers in the basement, that seems to be the where the issue mainly is. I would get someone to check your situation first.

    • I know it sounds really dumb but I have got an inkling feeling this old old not well kept house has a couple of problems in it under the radar from just idiots running the house.

Half the house looks like a bad in progress construction site the other half is the worst diy renovation ever like tiles falling off the bathroom wall barely clinging together let alone upright.

Parts of the house have definitely got something toxic or not good for your health but because the people who own it and manage it literally don't really care or know how to operate technology it makes me believe they might have missed a few things decades ago which are still lingering till this day.

It's just bad and my body and health wants to check it out for peace of mind but the ozbargain way and not willing to spend hundreds of dollars on a single test right now.. Maybe in a year when I'm earning and saving a bit more but for now in 2020 I just want something maybe that might even slightly indicate if there are bad particulates or masses hanging around because my health has been getting worse and I am trying to eliminate the possibility of it being the house.

My walls for one thing look like they have lead paint in them or something bad just from how old looking they are and I'm pretty sure they cut corners with everything not just how they live their life so this house probably has some not very good things within it if I was a gambling man.

I feel like my body can take a lot of physical struggles in life but I don't think I can beat poison and toxic substances with willpower and determination and persistence but just in case I have to I will start channelling it.

So yeah is there even some sort of like single use cheap test for various detection of poisons and toxic chemicals and substances etc I don't need something super expensive and high precision quality grade mainly looking for if there is a cheap screener solution first to confirm or deny it even before I spend more on this adventure.

Hope you follow what I mean I mean I am on ozb after all.

  • Impossible to know if this $5 job is the same as the $43 one from Bunnings. I guess it's like anything in life, risk it with the china cheapie, or pay extra for the brand name. Theres no right or wrong answer….. just a personal risk assessment decision.

But given it's something that may save your or your families life, ~$50 extra aint much to spend on a brand name device for a bit of added assurance over 10 years.

This $58 one comes with a 10 year warranty….which sounds pretty reassuring to me for $58 https://www.bunnings.com.au/quell-worry-free-carbon-monoxide…

    asbestos checker detector

I've never heard of an asbestos detector. Always thought one had to get a professional in to take a sample to a lab.

This is it. I do site work at a few places that have suspected asbestos in them, and every time there is a scare, guys turn up in hazmat suits, take a sample and take it back to a lab for testing.

I don’t think there is a hand held asbestos tester, if there was, these guys would have one, and it would probably by thousands of dollars if it did exist. (Or $5 from AliExpress…)

    • You can collect a sample yourself and post to a lab for analysis. No need for a professional.

I had one of those carbon monoxide detectors, but I threw it out because the constant beeping was giving me a headache.

  • As for the asbestos checker get a professional to check that out. For the carbon monoxide I’d recommend the Google Nest Protect.

  • I do commercial control systems for gas detection for WHS/OH&S applications. Think underground carparks, gas meter rooms in commercial buildings. Think uni labs/IVF clinics etc.

The Bunnings ones, even the expensive Quell one doesn't really say how it works so I don't trust it, unless there is something on the box that says "electro-chemical".

As asked above, why do you think need one?
I would buy a decent portable to be honest, around AU$400

My gut feeling tells me the place I live in is gonna make me sick in the long run and probably even shorten my lifespan significantly if I don't check this out now.

I just want to clear up some mistrust and mystery I have with this site aka this house I share live in.

Forget the landlord he has problems operating a printer among other things so yeah I'm gonna look out for myself now unless somebody can tell me I'm being paranoid and harmful substances can't harm me.

  • I got a couple of these a few years ago. See if they are discounted: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/267612

    • Any idea if you would need this anywhere besides a garage or enclosed space with a vehicle.

Like would this be any useful in a bedroom or kitchen.

      • useful in a bedroom or kitchen

I have it. Doesn't hurt and was pretty cheap.
