Basically looking at using it for riding on flat pavements (e.g. bike paths) and light mountain biking (e.g. on gravel).
Any comments on the quality of the above brands? e.g. ease of use, reliability, weight, speed, frame strength, ease of repairs, resale value etc.
Here are the models I'm specifically looking at right now:

Thanks for pointing that out, I've amended the original post.
Haha the I wouldn't mind the tan the Giant comes in. Looks like it's the best value for money. Not sure if you did end up updating the 99bikes Merida, but the one there still has mechanical brakes. And of all the bikes listed has the lowest level of groupset (gears) from shimano. I would recommend to avoid that one
I would personally probably go the Giant as well - But if you can get to your local shops and see if they have any stock of the Giant / Trek - or see what else is around at the moment
FYI, the first & third ones you listed above are hybrids whilst I believe the 2nd is a hard tail mountain bike. A closer comparative mode from Merida would be the Crossway.
Thanks for pointing that out, I've amended the original post. I've added in a new brand for comparison - Trek
Keep in mind that in this time of virus bike shops are very low on stock, especially entry level bikes such as these. If you want a bike now you may need to compromise on your choice a little or be prepared to wait.
Reputable bike brands will have a bike that is similar in specification at a similar price point. You might find that different components are better when comparing models, but there will be a minor compromise somewhere else. This is why I usually recommend finding one that feels best to ride. Failing that, your favourite colour.
I can vouch for that - been looking for the past few weeks for a new hybrid bike and pretty much everywhere (in Sydney at least) is sold out of the popular brands under $1k. You might get lucky with the odd model in random sizes still available. Trek's next shipment of Dual Sports is around Nov apparently, whilst Giant's new 2021 models are due possibly next month. However, note that Giant's prices are likely to be at least $100 more than the 2020 ones.
I would say whatever is available at your local bike shops that is within your price range and suits your needs.
Incidentally, I just read this article (which was written last year before Covid-19 was a thing): https://www.bicycling.com/culture/a27496999/bike-shops-need-…
Shop around and take note of the customer service of your local bike shops, as no doubt you'll be bringing the bike back to get it serviced (or repaired) and you may want to purchase clothing and accessories, so it gives you confidence/comfort to know that you can rely on your chosen bike shop to be helpful and friendly - otherwise you might get turned off from cycling altogether, which would be a shame.
@OP. I am in the same boat as you were. What did you finally end up buying and why? Thanks!
What did you end up buying OP?
Giant Roam 4 - worth it if you ask me. However, not the best for long-distance road biking but it'll certainly burn calories.
Lol I got the exact same bike in the end. Found it basically brand new on FB for cheaper than retail. So far does exactly what I need albeit slower than a road bike like you said.
Rule out the Merida. It’s a mountain bike and has mechanical disc brakes and 27.5 wheels.
The other two look very similar in spec. The Giant will have after sale servicing from the shop you buy it from whole the Polygon is online and will be that little bit trickier if you are in need of a warranty repair.
Which is your favourite colour?
