Outlook 2019 Wont Start?

Bit of head scratcher here, looking for any tips. Mate bought a brand new laptop the other day with an Office 365 subscription, DL'd Office no problems and setup his email account and everything was working fine. The next day he calls me to say that Outlook wont start. When clicking on the Outlook icon the little circle spins for a few seconds and then…nothing happens. Wont even start in safe mode and the other Office apps work fine. Did a repair install on office (full repair) and Outlook is working again, restarted Outlook a couple of times, no problems. Restarted the machine a couple of time, Outlook still working. Next day, same thing, Outlook not working. Did a repair install to get it working again, went in and disabled some add-ons, nothing drastic in there, just Kaspersky, and Teamviewer and a couple of MS add ins. Did a scanpst and an account repair just in case, no problems. Tried a couple of restarts, no problems. Get a text this morning, same problem Outlook wont start…wtf? So now I'm out of ideas and was hoping someone here might have had the same problem or might suggest some other steps to get it fixed? Pretty sure we shouldn't have to do an Office repair every time he wants to use Outlook. :)

TL:DR Outlook is stuffed, use Thunderbird instead?

  • That's 2020 for you

    • Awesome! I'll bet that's the problem. Will check the event log later on to confirm.

      Thanks.

    • I learnt my lesson long ago, if I have a stable platform then do not undertake updates for the sake of - only if you are satisfied the update is absolutely critical.

      • Though if there's a vulnerability present that's been recently discovered you do want to update asap so you aren't vulnerable. For non internet connected systems sure.

  • I had similar issues with Outlook on my desktop PC and laptop, last time I tried to fix it I couldn't get it to start again. Realised that for my home use purposes, the Mail ap in windows is fine and actually a lot more responsive, so just don't bother with Outlook any more.

    • Agreed, unfortunately It's not my choice. :)

  • MS are on a roll with breaking systems and software with their new rolling release schedule, I switched to LTSB and LibreOffice. I would just use Linux but as a desktop OS it’s still a bit too quirky for me.

  • If you have a copy of MS office I would uninstall then reinstall it

  • Sounds like this may be the problem.

I experienced it when it just started happening a couple days ago after an OS update. I was looking online to see how to fix the issue, then saw 16 pages of a community thread where everyone was reporting the same thing. And someone even gave a fix (however, I think it was for 365 users). By then Microsoft was on top of it investigating, so I decided to do nothing. Within the hour, I saw a message by someone that the problem seemed to be resolved for that person. I tried and sure enough, it was fixed for me too. Although the problem was still persisting for others.

I hope by now (over 13 hours later), the fix has propagated, and your problem has gone away? With browser history removed, I tried but could not easily find this thread again.

    • Well he hasn't called me back today so fingers crossed..(though it is Sunday ).

      • Update. In case anyone else has this problem, rolling back to a previous version of Outlook and turning off Office updates seems to have solved the problem. I spoke to the guy yesterday and everything is working.
