Supermarket ice cream, especially the premium brands like Haagen Dazs, are drastically overpriced for what it is. I can get a fresh and locally made and sourced 1000mL tub at my local Gelateria at Lygon St for less than $12 while even half-priced Haagen Dazs is $12.58 per 1000mL.
I don't think you can easily find a decent store that sells 1 liter of gelato for $11, and if you can, I won't be sure about their quality. Messina, though not the cheapest by any means, is $25 per liter for comparison.
I know my Ice cream and I used to be in the ice cream business, and while making my own ice cream, I still dig haagen Dazs ice cream.
Haagen Dazs makes the best supermarket ice cream and has the lowest overrun (density of ice cream, low overrun equals less air) you can find on a super market shelf.
What I'm saying is when HD goes on half price, it is a bargain! For the quality you are getting. Yes, it's "supermarket" ice cream. But it's the BEST ( both technically and taste wise, though I acknowledge taste is subjective) super market ice cream. Pity they don't have Belgium chocolate anymore.
Wasnt my experience when i tried a tub of the Haagen Dazs this weekend. Way too icy.
Also not invalidating your experience and expertise, but maybe you havent tried the gelatos on Lygon St….
Oh I have tried gelatos and I don't deny they are good.
Don't confuse that.
I've denied that good gelato aren't cheap. Not $12 per liter in the earlier post. No where near that.
Magnum tubs are still better, but these are a close second
Tried this ice cream. I find the taste good, but horribly icy.
Haagen Dazs was hard and icy out of the tub. Not smooth, costs about double the price (comparing special prices). Maybe because it has freeze dried strawberries inside.
I dont find it to be worth…Really didnt taste as good as having it from a Haagen Dazs store.
Tried the Strawberries and Cream, comparing it to Connoisseur Caramosa strawberry.
Connoisseur caramosa tastes good creamy. the strawberry compote tastes great.
Erm. The strawberries are obviously frozen. I assuming you bought ice cream right… and they are frozen?
Also, HD is meant to be harder. It's just physics. It's hard because there is less air. More air in ice cream equals softer, all else equals. More air means you are paying for air too. Sub standard brands use air and gums as ingredient to give the perception of creaminess. Don't believe, check the ingredient list of cheap louse ice cream. Often cream is not the first ingredient, and you get lots of ggum ingredient and stabalisers in them. Check the HD one, and all their ice cream is cream as first and major ingredient, milk, sugar and eggs. No artificial fillers.
Icy is not the opposite of creamy.
I also suspect you are confusing icyness and creaminess, and the reason why you think connoisseur is creamy is probably because of the higher (relative to HD) amount of air in them. Clearly not a connoisseur.
I have never bought ice cream from coles and woolies with discount less than 50%.
Just wait for it to be on half-price.
