Cygnett Smart Home Starter Kit (Works with Apple Homekit) $139 ($60 off) at The Good Guys

61

The Good Guys has the Cygnett smart starter bundle at a significant discount. It's not carried by many sellers and is usually sold at RRP of $199.

For people with Apple gear, this is a pretty good system because it natively supports Apple HomeKit.

      Done, sorry :-)

  • Bought this a few months ago from MYER and it loses connection to its sensor like consistently. I’ve installed the temp sensor and a smart plug in 2 rooms- integrated everything with HomeKit using multiple apps. The best app was EVE.

But unfortunately, my $200 proved not worth it as the connection kept dropping between the cygnett bridge and the temp sensor.

Therefore, I returned it. I’m still hoping this is something specific to me that I could fix up my network (maybe use mesh) and see if that could resolve it.

Until someone says otherwise, I’m staying clear from this.

    Good deal regardless, OP.

  • Doesn't the Apple TV work as a home hub?

    • Yeah, you need an Apple TV or HomePod or iOS device to work as a HomeKit hub. This is a Zigbee hub that connects to HomeKit and lets you connect up all the Cygnett smart home products.

      • So can I use any Zigbee things with this?
I was hoping to use it as an IR control for my AC, but apparently can’t do that and connect to Apple home at the same time :(

        • Yeah don’t get your hopes up for the IR. Doesn’t work half the time. The setting up is tricky as well.

What you may have heard is that it doesn’t incorporate the IR Actions into HomeKit. So if you want to use the IR feature, it won’t affect your HomeKit. It’s just as if you’ve got a bridge and an IR blaster separately.

Let me know what you go with- I’m particularly interested with HomeKit related automation. Just starting out

  • The Cygnet smart plug I bought here a few months ago kept losing connection repeatedly

  • Unless you want the IR capability, something like a SmartThings hub IMHO is a better option, it supports both Z-Wave, Zigbee and runs off WiFi. Also has a lot of 3rd party integrations. Retails for $119. You can find cheap Z-wave/Zigbee door and motion sensors for around $25.

Nope, avoid Cyngett’s smart home gear like the plague.

Pairing with HomeKit is an unachievable nightmare, especially for anyone with a half reasonable security setup on their home network.

Even turning off all my security features and services, I’ve never been able to get their gear to pair with HomeKit.

Their support is also woeful, and you can’t use their gear without registering an account on their systems.

Their user registration system persistently failed, and trying to use a unique email address (say [email protected]) wasn’t allowed.

And then there’s the whole issue of traffic with their services being routed across Chinese networks and ASN’s.

tl,dr: I’ve tried using their gear, and it’s a crapshoot that’ll just waste your time. Save your time and money, and buy better gear such as Hue or Eve.
