  • I just read the article this morning :

When a plastic container is marked with a microwave safe symbol, it means that it has been tested. They ensure that it does not melt or warp from the heat of the microwave, retaining its shape. ‘Microwave safe’ does not mean that the container will not leach toxic ingredients into the food, it merely means that the container will not explode or get so hot that it burns your hand. It does not mean that they contain no nasty chemicals, or that they won’t leach into the food. The levels of chemicals that enter the food are considered to be ‘safe’, but if you are exposing yourself to these chemicals on a regular basis, who knows what the consequences could be.

Is it worth the risk? If you’ve been microwaving your food in plastic containers for years, this will have been further adding to the huge toxic load you’re exposed to through cleaning products, cigarette smoke, personal care products, alcohol, food additives, pesticides, air pollution and medication.

    • I have been a lab rat for years eating food from Sistema/Tupperware containers and cooked in the microwave. Still alive and healthy.

Completely putting aside the pros and cons of microwaving plastic, I hope you're joking and don't genuinely believe that's a valid way to determine safety…

You need a lot of lab rats. True I am a sample size of one, but any peer-reviewed scientific literature needs to be based on real-world data which consists of real-world observations and measurements. My mother heated food in microwave Tupperware containers since I was an infant. Tupperware has been used for microwave heating by millions and for generations. The human body is resilient and arguably merely drinking alcohol or even caffeine is FAR worse.

Where is the data for your pros and cons?

          • @inherentchoice: My grandmother smoked at least a pack a day and lived into her 90s (eventually dying from a non smoking related illness). I guess everyone was wrong about smoking… Your argument is scientifically illiterate. You back pedaled very slightly, but you still seem to be under the delusion that your experience means something (even if acknowledging it's not as valid as actual research), when my initial anecdote should clearly show that it actually means nothing at all.

I have little interest in this subject so have no interest in finding data or declaring which side is right. I merely commented on your atrocious argument.

            • @callum9999: Why should I not keep being a "lab rat" by continuing to use the microwave containers? How is that an atrocious argument? You are making assertions here without evidence. THAT is an atrocious argument.

So do you think decades of regularly doing something with no ill effects count for nothing? My experience is at least one sample and should be considered in context with other relevant evidence. And in this case common sense says surely millions of others have the same experience.

              • @inherentchoice: Jesus, there is so much wrong with your post I don't know where to start…

                1. I didn't say you shouldn't be a lab rat. By all means, carry on if you want to.

                2. It's an atrocious argument because your only evidence is utterly useless.

                3. The only assertion I've made is that your argument is rubbish. Which is self-evident. Note: Your argument is rubbish, it doesn't necessarily mean your conclusion is wrong.

                4. Yes, it OBVIOUSLY counts for nothing. Or do you think my grandmother suffering no ill effects from smoking her entire life is proof tobacco is good for you?

                5. I have indeed considered your sample in context. You're 1 in 7 billion ergo the "context" shows that drawing any conclusions from just your experience is beyond absurd. You can "combine it with other evidence" if you like, but you haven't done so (and I don't imagine it would add anything meaningful). For all you know, there's a cancerous tumor growing inside you right now caused by this (I doubt it, but you never know!).

                6. Everything THINKS they have common sense. In my experience, very few people actually do. This thread being case in point - I would have thought it was common sense that your experience doesn't count for anything, but here I am, still trying to explain that very basic point to you! (Which doesn't mean I think you're stupid - I probably wouldn't bother correcting you if I thought you were!)

                • @callum9999: You're ignoring evidence and are refusing to consider the bigger picture. Surely this rant OBVIOUSLY counts for nothing. I feel sorry for you.

                  • @inherentchoice: I feel sorry for me too, I'd get more sense talking to a brick wall.

I was hoping you weren't completely scientifically illiterate and just misspoke, turns out you are. Shame.

          • @inherentchoice: That isn't how evidence works. Your healthy compared to what? For all you know you and your mother's actions have reduced your life expectancy by years or you may discover you have cancer next week. On the other hand you could live to be 120 and laugh over our rotting corpses. Anecdotal evidence (as with personal opinion) is like hearsay in court. It means nothing. It's more likely a reflection of your personality than any measurable truth.

            • @bigpallooka: Lab rats are a real thing.

              Where's your evidence?

              • @inherentchoice: I'm either feeding the troll or you truly don't understand evidence based science. At an absolute minimum a "lab rat" would be expected to be paired with a control (usually a group) that has been subjected to the same conditions except one (in this case eating food cooked in microwaved plastic). Do you have a twin who ate beside you all your life from stove cooked versions of the same food? Then as I said, at least a comparison could be made to say "See! I'm at least as healthy as they are!". As things stand you are suggesting a single "Lab Rat" telling you it feels fine is some sort of evidence. It could be that the "Lab Rat" has been so effected by the toxins in the plastic that it's reasoning is impaired (or a million other unknowable circumstances). It doesn't matter either way because you (and we) have nothing to compare your statement to so it's completely unreliable. I'm not holding you to a scientists burden of proof or even stating your opinion is wrong just making the point that no one, including yourself could possibly know. Specter003 questioned whether safety was a consideration due to their understanding of the source quoted (albeit not a scientific study itself). No one but you were making any statement as fact (just that your statement lacked any value or was in any way quantifiable), so we have no argument to support.

How did you coincidentally read that site 'this morning? (and then spam OzBargain with exactly the same comment multiple times.) What was your position on the matter yesterday?

      • I was browsing on meal prep containers with compartments & found only plastic ones.I hit the article when i was checking if the plastic ones are microwavable…
& I prefer not to microvave plastic… Mostly i use glass containers!!! thanks for ur concern…
Same comments on 2 places is not SPAM …

  • I have heaps of these and they are good. But then I got a few of their Brilliance ones and they are far superior. Not half price here but have been at Woollies in the past.
