  • Can someone comment which of those 2 drives, the elements at $281 VS the d10 at $369 is better shucked for general NAS use. It worries me the warranty is void when the d10s are shucked. Thanks

    • +2

The D10 is basically a Hitachi Datacenter drive (acquired by WD a few years ago and still lives on)

In short, the drives in this deal are really good.
      The D10's are next level.

But both will do fine in NAS. Some (myself included) actually prefer 5400rpm for that task but if you just simply want the best, that will be the D10 hands down.

        Thanks

      • would there be any appreciable performance benefit in having 2 D10s and 2 of the white labelled reds in this drive in a e.g. DS918+. Noob here, appreciate your input.

        • I'm buying a DS918+ myself and will be putting 4 of these white labels in. Unless you are doing specific tasks warranting bleeding edge performance, and it doesn't sound like this is the case, then no you will not notice any performance benefit from the faster D10s.

What you will notice is higher temperatures, louder noise and a minor increase in power usage. So the question should really be this: Where will you be using this DS918+? If its anywhere close by, those D10's are likely to be loud.

I've owned Hitachi enterprise drives before (which the D10's essentially are) and they were mindblowingly awesome. 24/7 for 6 years and nothing to indicate age in any of them other than the hours-on stats. They were actually too good because I no longer had a need for 4TB drives, they would probably have lasted another 6 years if I had a need for them.

I honestly think these consumer/prosumer drives are good enough today. You will have backups I presume, at least for your critical data.

If the NAS will be near you - get white drives
If the NAS will be out of sight and you want peace of mind - get the D10's

I don't think performance is really part of the equation in your use case. Both are great options because the D10 should be double the price of the white's but they're not. Usually the argument is "well if 1 of these cheaper drives dies, I'm still ahead on price" but you can't apply that logic here so if endurance is a big concern then the small price bump easily justifies the D10 provided you accept the above cons.

I hope you've found something helpful in this tired response :)

          • @Click_It: Thanks for the detailed and informative reply. I feel the temptation is to get something a bit better just because it's more heavily discounted but it seems both drives will be more than sufficient for my use case and likely to outlast the NAS itself. By the time I'm replacing these drives we're probably looking at drives triple the size at the same cost. You've convinced me toward the elements ones!

The elements has a white labeled red in there, the d10 has a server enterprise disk that is also for nas use.

      Its up to you.

    • The warranty on the elements are void when shucked as well…

Unless of course you carefully shuck and un-shuck them :)

  • Does anyone have a screenshot of the 12TB Black D10 at that price. Please share if you can. Thanks.

  • Anyone have their order not been charged to the credit card yet?

I'm worried they're gonna cancel mine, as usually within a few hrs the transaction shows up pending on my credit card.

    • Nah, it past experience these can sometimes take a good 7 days to appear on credit card and then ship. You’ve got plenty of time, be patient.

    • Amazon don't charge until they ship, which can be weeks at times.

  • I KEEP MISSING THIS DEAL!

I need one if anyone bought too many plmk.

    • +1

It's up for $349.95, but 2-5 week dispatch

  • This has to be one of the most volatile prices I've ever seen…

    $310 > $280 > $415 > $350 (all rough pricing) in the last week alone.

  • Damn it, I missed this but bought the $310 one. Time to cry..

  • I have a Shopback question I am wondering if anyone can help me with, because I am still confused by why I get money back through it.

I got this HDD at the $310 deal (which I'm happy with). I used Shopback app, and it now tells me I have $14.10 money back, pending.

This HDD has a 2 year manufacturer's warranty. So, am I giving up my warranty, for this $14.10 money-back? Is that what Cashbacks and Shopbacks, is?? Because I have read in places on Shopback, not to do returns or something. I am confused.

So, am I actually giving up my warranty, for this little bit of money back??! If the HDD stops working in only a few months time, for example, will it not be possible for me to return it for repair/replacement under warranty??

    • ShopBack has nothing to do with warranty. They get commission from amazon when you shop through them and they’re just passing some of those commission onto you. The money is pending because if you were to return the drives or cancel the order then those pending becomes decline.

    • +2

I have no idea how you came to that conclusion

    • Amazon do not warranty their external drives from amazon us to australia, they do provide a period you can return them for a refund. After that you are on your own, you can try to get warranty directly from WD australia though.

  • Payment has been deducted from my account for the WD 12TB Elements Desktop Hard Drive.

    • same :)

    • Same here and I got a shipping notification.

      • Who is the DPD carrier. Mine is in Kenosha, WISCONSIN US now.

        • I've never heard of them before til one of my Amazon's order was with DPD. They're a lot slower than fedex and DHL and they pass my order onto Auspost when it arrived in Australia.

        • That's the problem for me, when I check dpd site it says "We are sorry! The requested page or document could not be found!"
Not sure where else I should track this.
The last update on Amazon tracking says "Package arrived at a carrier facility US" (that was 4 days ago)

          • @johnmelb: Waiting for the next flight?

          • +2

@johnmelb: Track your DPD delivery here - https://uktracking.asendia.com/tracking-dpd.php
            The Amazon AWxxxx number works…

You end up at "wnDirect Australia" and the Final Mile Tracking Number is either Auspost or Fastway.

            • @Nom: Thanks for the tip, that does work.
Before I just searched dpd tracking, and stopped there.

  • Just received mine today, a week earlier than estimated arrival date. Delivered by UPS.

Amazon Box and Product arrived very beat up (No air cushion/space filler in the Amazon Box). Most likely will have to return it (which won't be fun cause it Amazon US).

    • Damn that sucks. Try your luck on live chat. When I ordered 3 x 5TB Seagate drives from Amazon Global last year, shipped from the US, 2 of the 3 drive boxes arrived pretty beat up. Amazon refunded me for the 2 which were beat up and let me keep them all lmao.

  • Got mine today also, delivered by fastway in the final leg, first time actually had a package from amazon delivered to my actual address from fastway instead of a collection point. Box was in great condition.

    • What model of drive did you end up getting?

      • The d10
