    That's an expensive soundbar.

    • Yep, crazy money. It's not like they've partnered with a hi-fi brand to supply the drivers or come up with a fancy enclosure design.
Dolby must make a killing on certification, though.

      • Aren't they're technically designed in partnership with Harmon Kardon as they acquired Harmon International around 3 years ago?…subjective if that's a "hi-fi" brand or not. They used to spruik the older models were a collab with HK but now I think they're marketing them differently, trying to say it's all their own work but the sound engineers are all ex-HK staff.

I wouldn't pay 1500-2k for one but the outgoing Q90R used to get very good reviews. Best you could buy according to Tech Radar if that counts for anything? I'd say this one will be better again at the Q90R was a good improvement on its predecessor.

    • Crazy price

Been holding out to see more reviews of this one, but seriously considering it - have a Q95T tv on the way so should be a good pairing

    • +1

I haven't seen any reviews on them but aren't they meant to work with the TV speakers as well? Not sure how that would go as I'd have thought the sound quality coming out of the TV wouldn't be anywhere near the quality of this thing.

  • For me i have been eyeing on Q90R soundbar but then came sonos ARC and was planning for that before samsung dropped this one .Now waiting for review for this one.

Just thinking as this is flagship model it will be better or similar to Q90R.

I got rid of the original Sonos sound bar and sub because it didn't support the latest Dolby technology, not to mention DTS. However I have to admit that Sonos does produce really good quality sound.

  • +5

Surely at this price you can get far superior audio quality from a 5.1ch setup?

is this only for people with very limited space or an extreme penchant for minimalism?

    • It's for people who are fooled by the "9.1.4 Dolby Atmos" marketing spin.

      • How is it 9.1.4?
I thought the first number was for number of speakers
        the second is the sub
I have no idea what the third is

I'm assuming it's emulation or is it like HDR where some only accept the signal but doesn't make a difference?

        • +3

Marketing speak, for soundbar as long as it has 9 speaker driver inside, it counts as 9.

        • +1

Third are vertical firing for Atmos. I believe it's 2 on the bar and 2 on the rear speakers.

    • i'm curious about your parts list.

i looked into this recently, and came to the conclusion that you have to either get extremely lucky hunting down a 2nd hand 5.2.2/7.4 receiver and subwoofer, or get a real barebones 5.1 receiver that has no licensing nor upgrade path whatsoever, and likely no future resale value. Even then you'd be lucky to get $200 per satellite/channel before blowing past $2k.

      • Happy to be corrected, but this is my opinion (without having heard this particular soundbar):

        1. Folks that are fastidious about sound aren't likely to choose a soundbar over separate 5.1
        2. Assuming (1) is accurate, ordinary folk in the market for surround sound have several sub-$1500 options (what you call barebones) that don't need to use fancy tech to simulate surround sound.

Also do many people care about resale value of something like this? Maybe I'm old fashioned but I see this as a long-term 'til death do us part purchase.

I guess my point is, to my non-expert mind soundbars are a compromise product that make up for lack of size with technological trickery, and that trickery is dependent on your space being compatible/optimised to suit it. Plus it costs money to achieve, with extra sensors and the like.

Anyhow that's my 2c, I'm not trying to change anyone's mind. I'm quite happy with my edifier bookshelf pair :)

        • I know what you mean, I'm from camp 1 with all my audio gear so far, until I had to set up a HT sound system. The cheapest I could sus out was a baseline 5.2 receiver with 4 Voll bookshelves and 2 subs (they don't make center channels), which ends up around $1.3k.

But this would mean missing out on a lot of the fancy spatial gimmicks in movies, and end of the day I use desktop stereos or headphones for music. The TV/Soundbar was more for the family, so a compromise had to be made there. Especially since the q90r/sn11rg were ~$1-1.3k on sale often.

About the receiver resale value, yes it's a 'til death do us part purchase' if you got a 7.2.2 (personal minimum for having spare upgrade channels), but those are pretty costly in the first place.

  • +1

Its predecessor the Q90R was pretty popular and had lots of deals here getting down to $1K mark, def would not pay the better part of $2K for any of them though,

  • I have the old model and it is truly superb, but I am seriously tempted to buy this for the spare lounge.

  • +1

Does anyone know if this has HDMI 2.1 and supports 4k 120hz pass through? Haven't been able to find any information on it anywhere!

  • +1

You'd be insane to spend this on any soundbar

  • +1

I held off from buying the Q90R due to known connectivity issues with the rear speakers plus absence of eARC and HDMI 2.1

Can confirm Q950T has eARC and HDMI 2.1 but the big question mark will be, have Samsung resolved the issue with the rear speakers?

    • +2

I've had the Q90R for 6 months now and it came with eARC working out of the box, no issues with rear speaker connectivity at all.

      • They must've rolled out firmware updates then over the last few months. Otherwise, there's quite a few reviews on the Samsung website outlining the issues i've listed above. Good to hear it all worked out well…. gives me more confidence in pulling the trigger on the Q950T, especially when I've got access to GG commercial pricing.

If people are interested, they should possibly look at the new LG SN11RG its getting some pretty good reviews and you get get it for a decent price from good guys corporate

    • I would seriously consider the LG SN11RG however, I just bought a Samsung Q70T QLED TV so makes more sense to pair it with a Samsung soundbar.

  • Managed to score a good discount on this soundbar from JB Hi-Fi! Awardone.com.au are selling the Q950T for $1399 including GST, Q900T $1068.

Called JB on 13 52 44 and asked if they could price match with Awardone as they have a physical store in VIC. The salesperson said he will have a chat with his manager, he couldn't price match $1399 however the lowest they could go was $1485 + $14.95 shipping, $1499 delivered.

I believe it's still a good price, I mean a small bargain is better than no bargain at all, right? :D
