If you always have access to internet get a chromebook. Or an iPad and compatible wireless keyboard.

If you only need it for web browsing just find one on Gumtree/Facebook marketplace

What is your budget? And would you want one with a bigger screen or a smaller screen?

applying for jobs via seek and alike

What's the target budget, and what's the scope of the laptop's longevity?

Size of laptop screen a concern?
For "Cheap", most likely will be built out of fantastic plastic

Have a look on Dell's refurbs

Full disclaimer, I work for one of Dell Technologies' subsidiaries, not Dell computers.. helped colleagues and friends buy over 10+ laptops with the outlet because it works out better than staff discount (Found out about outlet via ozbargain years ago)

Why does being 53 have anything to do with gaming? My 60 year old brother has been a keen gamer since at least the 80s!

    • Ask him about BBS.

Facebook marketplace, $300 will get you a decent laptop, Lenovo Thinkpad's are a good, reliable bet. Just might have to fork out $50-$70 for a new battery

  • Honestly, with your requirements being as simple as they are any laptop for sale these days will do what you want.

My advice would be to stick with the well known brands. Dell, Lenovo, HP etc if your budget allows it. Obviously the internal hardware changes the price considerably, but they'll all meet your need so just find something that is the right size, check out the screen quality, the weight etc if you plan to move around. Lastly, the warranty - the longer, the better!

Go to any store, buy the cheapest thing they have

    • Not really a good idea. My sister once bought the cheapest laptop she could find which had 32GB soldered storage and 2GB RAM with an Intel Celeron CPU.
It was complete piece of garbage. Min specs I'd recommend is an SSD, 4GB RAM, Intel i3.

      • Ive got a $400 laptop, brand new RRP, and its fine for browsing and email 🤷‍♂️

  • I like my Acer Aspire ES 15 - 8GB memory 100GB HDD - look on Good Guys = Sale on Now

    Cashrewards available there too :)

100GB HDD? I really hope you mean an SSD, no one should have a HDD as a primary drive in 2020

  • Thanks everyone, budget is cheapest that will do the job

Will look on market place or refurbished on dell
