Looking to Buy iPhone 11 Pro for Wife

Happy hump day!!

So, I want to buy a new phone for my wife. She is still using iPhone 7 and literally never complains about it. But I feel bad given I upgrade my phone almost every year. Worst, when she wants to take photos and asks for my phone (better camera, or may be snooping!).
Anyways, I did some research and it seems iPhone 11 pro might be the right one - given the screen size is not huge and at the same time she will not have to transition from iOS to android. Although, this would be the most expensive phone that we will use. Can you guys help with some good deals? Or any alternate suggestions? Has to be outright, just bought the Boost 12mo plan. Thanks.

You lost me at happy hump day.

  • Iphone XS - cheaper, awesome cameras but limited availability.

This is 2020. Your wife probably earns more than you, is better educated and has better hair. Trust in her capacity to buy her own crap.

    • Haha, thanks. If I leave it upto her, she would probably keep using her phone even after it charges no more. But I get your point!

iPhone 12 coming up, sure you can't wait to see what's on offer?

    • How much of an update can it be from the 11?

Hang on I'll give Tim Cook a call and let you know.

        • And he said??

          • @MS Paint: I left a message

Cookie it's socks, give me a bell back as soon as you can. OzBargain needs us.

          • @MS Paint: "Thank goodness Jony is gone."

        • Ask him how the 13 will be. May we should all wait for that one instead.

      • Not sure if I can define that but it'll be a darn site better than an iPhone 7, lol

JB has $150 off, probably the best at the moment retail, or try ebay/gumtree. Have had mine since September great phone, looks like the last of the 5.8".

    • Yes, thanks. That one seems to be the cheapest for the local stock. I might use my Suncorp 5% off gift card for JB Hi-Fi if I decided to go with this. Thabks.

My advice is don't switch her iOS to Android unless she really wants to. People like what is familiar to them. And since your missus likes to hold onto phones for more than 3+ years as it seems might as well get their newer devices, Apple will have you covered in Updates for 4-5 years. And once the iPhone 7 (it is an old phone) is not supported some apps will stop working later down the track as well, something to consider.

So in terms of whats avail in the Apple ecosystem… i'd say if your a bit more "budget" conscious the iPhone 11 (6.1") is your best bet, it offers most of the features of the 11 Pro (same main camera & ultra-wide, same processor and selfie cameras, runs iOS 13) but differs due to price, size (Pro is 5.8" OLED VS 11 is 6.1" LCD), weight, an extra lens (Telephoto) and better screen resolution (Pro uses an OLED). Is it worth it for an extra $400-500? For the average person probably not. I would also up the storage to 128GB since she likes taking photos instead of using the Cloud…. can't trust it lol.

if you want to splurge a bit go the iPhone 11 Pro (5.8" screen) but I reckon for your wife's uses the 11 would be a good compromise to the Pro as it does everything the Pro does minus a few things. And costs like $400-500 less.

    Hope this helps!

    • Great advise, thanks. You are right, I don't think that the price difference between 11 and 11 pro justfies the difference in specs. Phone size is a big factor, given she is still happy with her iPhone 7 primarily because of that.

If the size is a dealbreaker than the iPhone 11 (6.1") or iPhone XR (6.1") VS the iPhone 7 (4.7"), on paper looks big but it isn't Samsung Ultra huge… that thing is a brick n a half but I guess if your comming from a very small device it might seem like a big difference.

Look at it this way, while the iPhone 7 screen is 4.7" compared to a 5.8" & 6.1" screen dimensions those bezels are HUGE on the 7. Bigger screen = bigger battery, more screen to view photos, view web pages etc, I think the pros outweigh the screen size difference.

If the screen is still an issue, then the iPhone SE 2020 is your next best alternative. Pretty much same everything… same bezels like the iphone 8 (HUGE), same camera as iphone 8 (it is ok i guess), it is compact…. except the internals are way better. Also another benefit is that it uses Touch ID still which I think your wife would be very used to instead of Face ID (which i'm not particularly fond of). HOWEVER, the main reason you want to upgrade her is the camera. So I guess it is to do with some trade offs.

  • how much she use mobile?
Will she benefit from all the bell and whistles in iphone 11 pro (apart from the camera)?

    • She uses her phone mostly for browsing, streaming and when out somewhere, photos! And..a lot of texting haha..

  • If she likes the iPhone 7, why not go for the new iPhone SE2/8 update? Has all the new tech/latest operating system with that same old iPhone 7 feel… (and isn’t $2,000)

Sounds to me like you want an excuse to update her phone, not the that she wants it.

    • I thought about that one as well. Still contemplating.

I do hope the comment about snooping was said in jest!

I suspect I'm quite similar to your wife, I upgrade rarely and had a 7+ up until recently. I tried both the 11 and the 11 pro in the Apple store. The 11 pro felt much nicer in my hand, the basic 11 was a bit big (as was the 7+ in fairness). I'm slightly shorter than average with correspondingly slightly small hands… If she is also interested in the photos, she should be really happy with the camera.

I can't comment on bargains, once I buy I prefer not to know the good deals I missed… and the fact I mention in the Apple Store might suggest where I bought from!

    • Thanks, sane advise. She got small hands to, hence I was more inclined towards the 11 pro.

  • My wife went from iphone SE to Redmi Note 8 Pro and it happier than ever. She always wanted the smaller screen, but the bigger screen was easy to adjust too. Camera, battery and launcher was easy and it was no stress to adjust to the new environment.

  • 11 Pro is quite a bit bigger than the 7. Size of phones and ability to use in one hand and store easily is a big factor.
