Amazon let's me add this product to my list, the Sony link let's me add my email to be notified but neither of those options looks like I'm holding a place or anything like that. Am I missing something?
Nope, it's basically a template page that they have setup (to be updated with final details later on) and currently allow you to add to 'Wishlist'. Beyond that, nothing else. You're not in line for anything, you haven't ordered anything, you haven't secured anything at all.

Launch consoles almost always come with faults. The price WILL come down after launch.
The amount of exclusive games and experiences for the system will not justify the cost for the first 6-12 months.

Before they restock and potentially revise any faults. And it will only sell out due to the fear and FOMO mentality that you're implicating yourself with.

People want something new to occupy themselves for the winter break as unlikely to be going on vacations this year. Any faults or issues will be resolved via warranty anyway. Most people have had no issues with launch day hardware.
The demand will be high for this and expected to exceed PS4 so you won't get one for months and price won't come down. Even if it did within a bundle, not by much. Maybe by a cinema ticket or two which isn't worth waiting for months.

Also, I usually sell the console when a revision comes out. You don't lose a lot of value on a popular console.
You have 2 years warranty under ACL to help with any faults. Amount of exclusives will build up over time but games optimised for these consoles will keep coming out. Hence why preordering.

Exactly why you shouldn't pre-order. Launch prices are astronomically higher than if you wait. If you wait the consoles will likely drop in price and have faults fixed without needing to make a potential warranty claim.
