Australian-owned company and Australian produced are 2 different things, and I'm not sure if it is locally grown.

As a person who likes their rice, 2018 harvesting season have been really bad for yields of Australian-grown koshihikari rice.
And then COVID-19 hit, and all that good stuff harvested in 2019 is all gone now.

Sunrice has now switched over to importing koshihikari rice from Uruguay now.
Recently, there has been plenty of sushi rice sourced from Vietnam as well.

    • God damn I only buy Sun Rice sushi rice, I looked in many Asian shops in Perth and only found one.

Had no idea why there was a shortage, assumed it was just Covid.

      I had to buy a 10kg sack for $37 !!!! Thats 1kg pack prices.

Guess I'll have the buy this Vietnamese one, Christ.

We had a drought in 2018, and koshihikari rice is easily influenced by weather.
There wasn't enough locally harvested koshihikari rice to supply for that year.

As for 2019 harvest, I'm not even sure.
The wholesaler isn't offering it to me (as a non-commercial buyer) anymore ever since.
Perhaps set aside for commercial buyers only, to keep up with restaurant and catering demand from such regular buyers.

However, when supermarket rush round.1 came in, everyone who knew which Asian supermarkets to get it from (which I learnt much later), quickly exhausted their stock.

Never came back on the shelves until I spotted some last week, which is highly unusual, given I know when is koshihikari rice harvested.
The months don't work out, unless it is very old stock; or that's some super quick harvesting, packaging and logistics.

And that's how I spotted the very small "Produced in Uraguay" marking…

Can any rice connoisseurs give us an honest review of this rice?

Few rice sales on at the moment and I have no idea what to buy.

I would also like to know. Thank you 🙏

    • If this is the Thai grown variety, its quite low quality. Chalky taste with a powdery mouth feel. Have to check the country of origin in person to know for sure.

My go to rice for Koshihikari is currently Massigura Aomori rice (can be found at Costco on occasion) however it is pricey at $31.99/5kg. This is the duck's nuts and everything else is a compromise.

I still have one bag of Aussie grown Sunrice sushi rice when I feel like slumming it.

  • IIRC, Produce of Vietnam.

  • Does anyone use this rice for anything aside from sushi?

    • steamed rice

  • Bought the 10KG pack on the weekend.
It has some smell on the rice before and after cooking it.
    Is it normal?
This is my first time to buy the short grain.
    Cheers.

  • which branch has the stock? couldn't see in my area 6027
