    • the ebay one you suggest doesnt seem to support Win7, where as the tiny deal one states it does
maybe not the same product you are comparing.
Been there before with my kids wanting to do Xbox 360 recordings and i got the wrong usb thingo, without win7 compliance, of course it didnt work on the win7 pc.

These cheap models aren't worth the headache anyway.

    • So true. I got so frustrated and gave up!

  • It's a great little device. Also comes with a cut down Ulead video editing software

  • The price is good but I did a research times a go and found that that is the value you get.
Also be ware that there are many fake devices around that look similar to a brand name which owners argue that is the original one, I forgot the name of it.

So what's a good one then? I am interested. Thanks.

  • the question is how much lag is generated while playing on a computer screen?

    • Not much, you can play games well. The issue with these is the terrible resolution and video quality you get, you can't read text when playing with a 360/ps3. And IIRC this certain model won't display PAL60 (Austrailan devices) in colour.

    • last time I used one like this, the game was unplayable (laptop, dual core, 4gb ram, low end nvidia graphics). the resolution on these will be downright awful as its composite connection (576i) depending on what your wanting to play and on what there are other options out there (though none come to mind for under $10).

I have one. dont waste your money, its a pain in the arse to find the x64 drivers, and when you get it going the quality is worst that low res on youtube. Craptastic Junk

Aha, I tried to convert my parents old VHS home movies with this thing and I gave up. Horrible audio distortion, bad picture, constant program crashings, etc. Not worth it!! Might try a more expensive capture card in the future. Any recommendations?

I recently bought an Avermedia Dark Crystal HD capture station, best money I have spent. I only need to cap at 720p and it uses component cables (like the hauppage hd pvr) but this will also output via HDMI. It will do up to 1080i and is USB2.0 compatible. I am very happy with it.

        edit:
do NOT use it to play games via pc/laptop, you still need a monitor/tv to play it on as the lag via the pc is a good 1-2 seconds (i5/8g/ssd - I blame USB2.0). I know the blackmagic intesity shuttle is a better capture unit but I dont need 1080p AND I dont have a compatible USB3.0 port (and its too much of a pain in the butt to upgrade my pc for a capture card and this will work on my laptops too)

        • $200 for this capture card. Damn, they don't come cheap if you want quality!
If I can convince the parents to pay for half I might consider getting it; after all, most of the old VHS movies I wish to convert are their family memories from the 80s, most before my time.
If I consider the cost of getting them professionally transposed to DVD then there will be a definite saving in the long run and the more videos I copy the lower the unit cost will be. Come to think of it, this unit is probably a little overkill as all the transfer will be of old VHS at 240 resolution, definitely no HD content whatsoever.
          Nostalgia never came cheap :p

        • don't normal PCI/PCI-E or even some USB TV Tuner cards support AV capturing?

          it's should be around $30 to $100?

        • couldn't you just buy a dvd recorder from ebay with av input and play from the vhs to dvd recorder. record to disk and then edit on computer? or is that crazy talk?

      • I have one of these - the software is a bit cludgy and error prone but works fine once you get the hang of it. If you're like me, and don't mind dicking around with software, it will do the job, and at a good price.

  • These cheap ones are shithouse. I bought one a couple of months back and it didn't show video at all. Good for a cheap audio capture device but not for much else. I'd avoid this even at such a cheap price.

I ended up with a Compro Videomate C100 for $34 which works wonderfully.

  • I own this exact same capture device. I plugged it into my Windows XP desktop, installed the software, and it all worked on the first try, no fuss. At first I was looking at the capture stream wondering why it looked so crap, until I remembered I was watching standard def video being blown up on a high-res LCD monitor ^_^;

The lag on mine is about one quarter of a second, which is not so annoying for moving through game menus and adventure or turn-based games, but makes it almost imposible to play action games. Great for transferring old VHS tapes before they die, or so you can play them without dusting off the old VHS player, though.
