A Fantastic Headphone & Class A Tube Amp for $177! (up to $127 off RRP!) FREE SHIPPING!

470

I've tested this combo thoroughly over the past week and came out so impressed I thought I'd share it with all of you…
The combo is the best I've heard under $200. Smooth, detailed and warm sound, comfortable and pretty!

The bundle includes a Goldring DR150:
http://www.jaben.com.au/goldring-dr-150-headphone/
as well as a Bravo Ocean headphone amplifier:
http://www.jaben.com.au/bravo-ocean-hybrid-tube-class-a-ampl…

Moreover, if you'll mostly using with a computer I'd highly suggest adding the Go-Vibe Mini USB DAC (half price at only $35 with the bundle). It's basically a USB soundcard that'll be a huge improvement over your PC/notebook's crummy stock headphone jack.

If using an iphone/ ipod, I'd suggest adding the dock and interconnect ($15, usually $35) for cleaner signal to the amp!

And as always, free shipping Australia-wide! Express is only $5 extra

We don't have too many of these, once they're gone you'll have to wait until the next batch… at regular price =(

If you have any questions feel free to post a reply here, send me an e-mail at [email protected] or give me a call! Contact details are on the site.

"Like" our facebook page for your chance to win goodies every week!

Many audiophiles use ipods with external dacs or line out, as suggested.

Really you shouldn't have commented unless you know what you're talking about.

        • +3

          Hi mate,

The Bravo ocean is $90 from ebay+ $20 shipping.
Don't forget that we have to charge GST (10%) which doesn't go towards our pocket!

As for it being a cheap piece of junk, I beg to differ… It's obviously not as good as much more expensive amps but brilliant for the price

        • +10

I don't think anyone is desperate enough to use alts to vote you down. Just a lot of people realise you are just being negative against a good cheap option for people who want an entry into high quality audio.

        • +8

In addition, negs from the same IP address counts as only 1 AFAIK. Nobody in their right mind would care enough about what you say to switch to a different internet connection just to neg you repetitively..

      • +4

The headphone threads always draw out the "comment on everything despite not knowing anything about it" crowd. Only surprise here is that JV isn't around asking if it's any better than the iPhone headphones.

    • +2

Hmm? Not sure what you mean.
Using the dock connector should give you a better signal as it takes out a line-level output instead of the headphone output which IS noisier because of the additional components in the path

The perceived improvement will be different from person to person of course, but $15 is pretty damn cheap…
Basically the add-ons are additional discount if it interests the buyer =)

    • Did he say high end? I don't see it in the OP, unless they have changed it.

  • Do you have a physical presence in Sydnet? Or is there any way you could waive the shipping cost?

    • +3

Shipping is free for everything in the store!
Just choose free shipping at checkout, express is a $5 top-up

If all goes well in Melbourne, hopefully we'll open a store in Sydney sometime…

  • how does this compare with the fiio e7? been looking for a headphone amp/dac for a while… budget is an issue so is it much better?

    • I personally think so, it's a lot more powerful and it's less of a "bass booster" box
The Go-Vibe DAC is a few steps above the one contained in the e7 as well.

That said, we do have the e7 in stock if you're set on that… We've got a fair few things that need to be put up in the store!

  • -1

Is this discounted or your usual price?

    • This is the discounted bundle price this week only. The usual price is $124 for the DR150 and $120 for the amp. All prices in the store include free shipping!

  • <3 Jaben.

Already got a nice desktop amp and desktop DAC combo, but +'s all round.

  • I remember a while back in one of your posts you mentioned you had some complys for i think 5$. Do you still stock these? i cant seem to find them on your site

    • +1

Yep, embarassingly completely forgot to put them up on the store!
For now, can you send an e-mail to [email protected]?
      Thanks!

  • +18

Don't know anything about high end audio, but I like the reps openness and willingness to answer questions so a plus from me just on that alone.

    • +2

Thanks! To be honest a lot of audio is to do with preference…
What one person consider amazing might be terrible to others!

Hence I only put up deals that are especially good value and sound "universally good" to my mates with varying music taste!

  • Any DAC + headphone amp specials coming? Already have a good set of cans.

    • Do you have a specific one in mind?
Why don't you send an e-mail to [email protected] or give us a call (contact details on the site) and I'll see what I can do for you!

  • I got the Go-Vibe Mini USB DAC from them a while ago and compared to the onboard card on my x220, I don't really notice much difference at all except for one main thing the volume of the DAC is too loud especially in quiet places, even at minimum volume I'd have to use an impedance adapter. I just stuck with onboard….

    • +1

Ah, that's a shame… Did you use an amp with it as well?
There should be two volume control, the windows volume control and the music app's volume control but I'm sure you've already tried that!

The Go-Vibe DAC is a lot more about having a clean slate for the amp to work with rather than altering the sound or adding more power. If the start of the chain is bad, the rest of the component hasn't got a chance!

I hope you're enjoying your Goldrings though

      • Don't have an amp for it

Yeah the Goldrings are nice, they sound much better than my AD500s but they probably won't get touched with the weather getting warmer

      • I agree with the comment that the Go-Vibe is too loud. More of a concern for me is that it has a really bad noise problem; when nothing is playing, there is a constant soft white noise that can be heard, which I find renders it quite unusable.

  • DR150 is a nice headphone. It's a vevy good buy for the price. Plus a tube amp, that will be a interesting combination.

  • about to send you an email! watch out :)

  • Purchased! My mate got a pair of the goldring from your last promo and I can only imagine itd be even better with the amp!

  • What does an amp do? I googled it, but what benefit would it have if simply listening to music?

    • +9

Hi mate, I'll do a simple explanation and link you a more thorough explanation if you're interested =)
Super simple explanation: it makes it go louder (amplifies the sound).

      More detailed explanation:
Basically any speaker/headphone NEED an amplifier to operate.
There are amplifiers integrated into sound cards, ipods, laptops etc. but most of them are low-powered and fairly terrible because it's cheaper to do it that way and costumers don't really know better.

Home speakers are rarely active (which means contains an amplifier) so you need a separate amplifier.

With a headphone amp, you re-amplify your ipod/CD player (the headphone jack CD players have headphone amps integrated)/computer which gives the headphone the extra oomph it needs.
If you use a DAC or the line-out of your music/cd player you bypass the integrated amp for a better result!

Now finding a "good" amp is more of a trial and error. It's a lot more to do with things matching well rather than technical specs.
A tube amp tend to colour the sound a bit to make it more "analogue" "smooth" or whatever other words people use to describe it. I've found that this one compliments the DR150 quite well.

I hope that's not too much to digest =)

Here's the wiki if you'd like to find out more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Headphone_amplifier

      • hmmm.. that does help. Thanks.
I didn't realise specific amps were made for headphones.

so i guess these types of amps are mainly useful for a house hold situation. With the headphones, no one will practically carry it around with their mp3 player, while they go for a stroll?
Interested to know if anyone does carry it around though.

  • I've been looking around for a DAC for use between my Macbook Pro and KRK Rokit 8. Any recommendations with what you have, or am I in the wrong ballpark? I'm an amateur when it comes to these things!

  • +1

Is there a reason why you did not provide the names of the items on offer in your opening post? I read it twice thinking that I must have missed it.

    • Same here. In fact, they should really be in the title as well.

    • Whoops sorry! Will fix that up now

  • @ Jaben. Can you use this amp with sound cards that have surround effects like "Dolby Headphone" or would the amp somehow stuff up the effect?

    • -1

DACs are sound cards, so it will completely skip your own sound card.

Edit: Oops, it's an amp not a DAC. Sorry, got confused by the lack of product description.

    • +1

If it's not in a set (eg. matching soundcard and headphones for 7.1 surround or something like that) it shouldn't affect it.
It'll simply enhance what's already there.

Essentially "Dolby Headphone" is a combination of EQing and reverb (echo), there shouldn't be a problem at all.

      • DH is not EQing and reverbs. It is a Head-related transfer function/matrix taking in 5.1 or 7.1 channel information. Reverbs? Sure, due to various "room sizes" of DH1, DH2 and DH3. EQ? Possibly. But Both EQ and reverbs are not what produces that surround (not stereo) effect.

While the "it shouldn't be a problem" part is accurate, for an audiophile (a company that tries to sell high end products) you described Dolby Headphone wrong. You could say, DH is "like" adding EQ and reverbs. Your explanation is worst than oversimplification.

Dolby Headphone and CMSS-3D both use their patented HRTFs technology and other DSP.

        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Head-related_transfer_function

        • +3

Sorry, I thought "essentially" would translate as "like" in the reader's mind.

Reverb is a form of delay, which is what Dolby Headphone and other DSPs do if I'm not mistaken. It downmixes however many channels into two by applying delays and EQ differently for each channel, hence the directional effect.
Afterall, it is an emulation and you can't do much more with two channels…

Not saying I'm correct of course, but that was my understanding and I'm quite sorry if it's incorrect.
In my defense, we don't deal with Dolby Headphones much, we focus on mostly stereo and music reproduction =)

  • How does this compare to the Hifiman ef2?

    • Sorry, I've never played with an EF2!

  • +6

This is one of the best Company Reps I've ever seen post on OzBargain. Well done, Jaben!

There is no way I'd pay this kind of money for a little 1-tube amp. I just don't listen to headphones enough to even use the Fiio E5 that I have sitting here in the shelf. But the Goldring looks cute and I assume it's got a nice warm sound.

    • Thanks mate!
For not much over a hundred bucks it's one of the cheaper tube amps money can buy and I think it's pretty good!
The goldrings are one of the biggest surprises this year for me… They're awesome!

  • Sorry for the slow reply over the last couple of hours guys, all your questions will be answered shortly!

  • Any special on just the iphone/ipod dock by itself?

Currently have a pair of quad customs IEM for live music playing but want to get into quality portable music.

Was thinking of getting the Fiio E11, iphone/ipod dock and a basic interconnect. Or will a better quality interconnect make a difference?

    Thanks Jaben!

    • Hi mate, how about you send us an e-mail at [email protected] or give me a call so we can talk about it in depth!
Audio is a lot more about trying to get a good match rather than good/bad so knowing what your IEMs are, what you listen to etc. would help me in making a recommendation.

Interconnect is a touchy issue, the difference is there in my opinion but how much difference differs from one person to the next!

      • My IEMs are UE TF10s reshelled into customs by Unique Melody. They added an extra mid driver during the reshelling.

I mainly listen to alternative/rock - Foo Fighters, Kings of Leon, etc. Being a drummer, I like punchy bass and sparkly highs but also like strong mids for guitars to cut through.

Frankly, I'd wanna go a cheap route to start (heck I'm on Ozbargain!) and go from there. Based on cost, it looks like my options would be a Hippo Box or Fiio E11?

        • Hi mate, I would recommend the hippo box, it's a great sounding little thing!

Hydrogenaudio is one of the most respected audio sites, they are pioneers in the use of double blind listening tests to rate audio quality, even Apple engineers visit the site to improve their iTunes audio encoders, here are 2 discussions on tube amps:

    http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=6116…
    http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=5926…

    From Wikipedia:
    -=Advantages=-
-Very linear (especially triodes) making it viable to use them in low distortion linear circuits with little or no negative feedback.[3]
-Inherently suitable for high voltage circuits.
Can be constructed on a scale that can dissipate large amounts of heat (some extreme devices even being water cooled). For this reason valves remained the only viable technology for very high power applications such as radio and TV transmitters long into the age when transistors had displaced valves in most other applications.
-Very low "drift" (of specifications) over a wide range of operating conditions, specifically high heat and high power. Semiconductors are very heat sensitive by comparison, forcing compromises in solid state amplifier designs.
-Electrically very robust, they can tolerate overloads for minutes which would destroy bipolar transistor systems in milliseconds.
-Easily removable for testing or replacement – it is much harder to replace a faulty transistor.
-Softer clipping when overloading the circuit, which many audiophiles and musicians think gives a more pleasant sound.
-Valves with the same type number tend to have very similar characteristics to each other whereas semiconductor devices of the same type can have considerably different characteristics.

    -=Disadvantages=-
-A cathode heater is required. Heater power represents a significant heat loss and energy use.
Higher voltages are required for the anodes, compared to solid state amplifiers of similar power rating.
-They are significantly larger than equivalent solid-state devices
-High impedance and low current output is unsuitable for direct drive of many real world loads, notably various forms of electric motors.
-Valves may have a shorter working life than solid state parts due to various failure mechanisms (such as heat, cathode poisoning, breakage, or internal short-circuits).
-Available in a single polarity only whereas transistors are available in complementary polarities (e.g., NPN/PNP), making possible many circuit configurations that cannot be realized directly with valves.
-Valve circuits must avoid introduction of noise from ac heater supplies.
-Microphonics – valves may sometimes be sensitive to sound or vibration, inadvertently acting like a microphone.
-Power consumption due to the heater requirements.
During the life of a valve, its characteristics can change considerably as it ages whereas the characteristics of a semiconductor tend to change very little

It basically comes down to your getting an stock standard amp without remote or any of the modern refinements, prone to distortion that may or may not sound better depending on many factors which may change with time! <- And that's being generous

    • Hi mate, I've never said or implied that valve amps are better. Simply that this particular one is a good match to the DR150.

However, the facts are that tube amps are usually more expensive (both to me and to you) and do have a "tubey" characteristics however you'd like to interpret that. That's all that I expressed in the post. And that it's more interesting to look at which I think many would agree with.

From your list, I've extracted these points that I feel are relevant (feel free to correct me!):
      Advantages:
-Very linear (especially triodes) making it viable to use them in low distortion linear circuits with little or no negative feedback.[3]
-Softer clipping when overloading the circuit, which many audiophiles and musicians think gives a more pleasant sound.
-Valves with the same type number tend to have very similar characteristics to each other whereas semiconductor devices of the same type can have considerably different characteristics.

      Disadvantages:
      - Higher temperature and power consumption
      - May have shorter working life (the valve itself, not the amp)
      - Microphonics

I personally like tube amps in general because of the "rounding" effect it has on some recordings and lower-end systems. I agree it's not the most accurate way to reproduce music but that's not how most headphones are tuned anyway.

So can we agree that some will think that it sounds more pleasant and has drawbacks?

Very very few headphone amps have remotes or other "modern refinements".
What refinements would you like to see exactly?

    • +1

Wow, way to downvote the technology, not the deal.

It's a good deal on the two products, some people are into tube amplifiers (I've got a Little Dot I+ tube amplifier as well as a solid state amplifier) - there is no basis behind your neg.

      • -5

No basis? I think my reference's to reputable knowledge and scientific websites speak for themselves

Some nice Sennheiser's with a stock standard iPod will produce arguably better sound than this for a lot cheaper, so what's the deal here??

    • -1

Try Yoga . Deep breathing helps. Almost as much as listening to beautiful music on my Neuhaus T-2 tube amplifier.

  • Any deals for those who forked out for the Goldring bundles earlier on?

Damn, this is a downward spiral, first the Feels Pro 900, then Goldring DR150, now I'm looking at an amp! =P

    • Sure, why don't you send me an e-mail at [email protected] and you can have the amp at a discounted price =)
Anyone else that purchased a pair of headphones from us before can do the same thing too!

  • +3

    +1 for a great rep!

  • sweet when is the store opening? I would be so over that!

    • End of next month at the latest! I hope I'll see a few of you guys over there =)

  • Just wondering? How would this go with an iMac? My 3.5mm jack doubles as an optical (through a Toslink adaptor). Would this accept an optical signal (which I believe is superior to running an analogue 3.5mm cable to the amp?

    • Hi mate, unfortunately for something to process an optical signal it has to contain a DAC.
Your choice is either to just use the headphone out of the imac or spend the $35 and go for the USB DAC which should give a decent amount of improvement.

  • I have a Go Vibe Petite Amp+Dac… How it fare if i plug in the tube amp from that? Thanks

    • Hi mate, generally I'd advice against double amping but the petite is quite a neutral sounding amp…
I just tested it and it definitely is quite an improvement with the DR150!

  • My birthday is coming up so I'm very tempted to grab myself this sweet sounding deal :)
How long do you think stock will last?

    • Hi mate, I'd have to count but there's less than 10 left from a quick glance.
      Happy birthday! (soon)

      • less than 10 now ;)

  • Hi mate, unsure if you'll be able to help me. I have a pair of Phillips HD890's, and my sister lost the cord for them years ago but i always held onto the the headphones.

They take a standard 3.5mm jack at the connecting device end, but a much smaller jack that plugs into the headphones themselves. I'd probably say half as big? or possibly less. Could you shed some light on what kind of connection this might be? Phillips was no help years ago, and would probably be even less help now.

If you sell such a connection please let me know!

    Thanks

    • +3

Hi mate, I don't sell it but I think I can direct you somewhere that does.
From your description it sounds like it's a 2.5mm connection on one end and 3.5mm on the other.

      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2-5mm-MALE-3-5mm-STEREO-AUDIO-AUX…

I reckon your best bet is to try that… For a buck if it's not a big risk!

      • Thanks so much for your help mate!

  • Can you recommend another USB DAC without the soft white noise? I would get away from my laptop soundcard's white noise only to go to something that will not have white noise.

    • Hi mate, the white noise is because of low impedence (only happens with 32ohm headphones or less). If you use an amp in between it won't have the hissing issue.

The other option is perhaps to get the Petite as both the DAC and Amp? It's not as good however, portable equipment is rarely as good dollar for dollar.
Unfortunately our other DACs are a fair bit more expensive.

  • Any chance of you guys getting into the online gaming headset market? I just bought a pair of Logitech G930's and im already getting buyers remorse before the item is even shipped to me. I will probably end up selling them on ebay for what I paid.

Would really love a high quality headset that I could say I bought from a shop like jaben. the current headset and mic you have on the website doesnt look amazing/isn't priced for the high end.

    • The only one I've got at the moment is the Sony GA500.
Which is pretty awesome in terms of the technology used as well as what it looks like!
Also, it's damn rare in Australia =)

The MMX-1 is pretty damn good all purpose computer headset though, I use one personally while I'm away for music/skype/games but of course the one above is a much better choice for gaming.

Let me know if you like it and send me an e-mail at [email protected]

  • Received my bundle, top marks on quick delivery!

Headphones sound great but occasional i'm getting the left ear dropping out. This is a pet hate of mine as its happened with heaps of cheap headphones I've bought in the past.

Turning on and off the amp seems to fix this? Any idea why?

My setup is the bundle with the DAC and music through groove shark.

    • Can you plug it straight into your ipod and see if it's the headphones or the amp?
Maybe the tube is not inserted properly and should go in a bit deeper.
Also try the other jack (if you're using the mini output, try the 1/4 inch)

Don't worry, I'll get it fixed up once we find out what's wrong!

      • Yeah I think i just didn't have the amp tube inserted properly. Been using them all day and no problems. Awesome headphones!

  • Received mine too. Do I need to purchase an AUX cable to use it with my computer?

    Thanks.

    • Hi mate, if you just purchased the bundle by itself you'll have to purchase a cable to connect it to your source (computer, CD player etc)
