Buying a Rower, Holding for Concept 2 Waiting List or Buy Water Rower Outright

Hi guys, any of you here waiting for invitation to buy a concept 2 rower after joining their wait list? Or anybody already got the invitation? I have joined the waitlist on start of June but received nothing as of yet.

I'm considering buying a water rower just because it's available but never tried a water rower before. On the other hand I've used concept 2 at the gym. Any thoughts from rowing enthusiasts who used both machines here how they compare?

depends on what your aim is? generally speaking, the water rower is designed to give more of a rowing feel and you get to hear the water swishing instead of the chain and the fan. While both can give you a work out the concept 2 is designed more for gym use

Also, keep in mind the 3rd party software isn't really designed for WaterRower.

Resellability of the concept 2 is better, as more people know of it

    • It seems a tough choice, I like concept 2 because of whole community built around it with challenges and so on.
In the gym concept 2 notice didn't bother me but I guess it should be more noticeable in a quiet house. But then pumping water in and out kinda feel messy. Especially if everyone wanna use it.
May be I will hold on until I can order a concept 2. Second hand prices for concept 2 these days are not worth, so much beaten up units are going at almost retail price.

I don't know where you are at in terms of indoor rowing, but at some point, it's going to get boring rowing endless km's. Are you going to geek out on your rowing? as I think the water rower doesn't come with connectivity, I believe its called smart row and it's $499 that will give you your rowing data to your phone.

Personally I found it a lot more enjoyable to row with this, but it only works with concept2 PM https://www.digitalrowing.com/Products/index.html as it has training plans and racing (its glitchy most of the times) while you don't need it, it's a lot easier then programing the erg.

Lastly you could get the WaterRower and buy a PM5 so you kind of get the best of both worlds

You aren't pumping water in and out? We have a water rower and it gets filled once and that's it. There's an additive to stop the water going disgusting.

What's the price difference? We picked up our Water rower at Costco for somewhere in the $800-900 range and I prefer it to any model I've used in a gym. Haven't been a gym member in years though, so no idea what brands they were.

The only thing I have noticed with the water rower is I find it puts a bit of strain on my lower back, but I've had a dodgy back since playing rugby as a teenager, so not an issue for everyone.

I have a WaterRower, I've been quite happy with it. I prefer it to the Concept2 that I've used at the gym, but that's largely down to personal preference. The Concept2 has variable resistance whereas the WaterRower is fixed, but the WaterRower feels as though you're on the water and you get that similar feeling.

    • Yes that's why I like water rower. So many good stuff about how it feels, and looks.

We love our water rower (had ours before Frank Underwood made them famous!) but the one downside for us is the handle. I have small hands, but even hubby finds the shape and size a bit hard to grip when using for longer than a few minutes, resulting in some pretty calluses. It's just an odd shape. Other than that, it's served us well for many years, and still looks/works as new.

I joined the Concept2 waiting list in May and still don't have a time for when I can buy it.

One big advantage for the concept2 rower is it will last at least 20 years, and even then, it is pretty cheap to replace parts so you can make it last a long time. Learning about this made me feel a lot more comfortable about spending $1,600 on it.

Have you ever tried using a water rower before? I tried one once at my old gym, and it was the worst thing to use. You might be able to find a water rower to try in Rebel Sport or some other sport warehouse.

    • Hope you get a your chance to order one soon. For same reasons you mention I decided to consider concept 2. I have never used a water rower even at the gym. By the looks of it I can see that foot rest is kinda placed on a higher level than concept2. Which I would not prefer. Too bad I cant try a water rower otherwise could have made a decision easily.

    • Mate, have you got any update… Assuming you must have been in the waiting list for roughly 5 weeks, it should be pretty close to your chance. https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/38w7xn89 check for last comnet by the user "Me, Myself and I" say "I was on the wait list for about five weeks. The first load of stock only arrived last week. Price was $1,595." pretty excited till I get my chance.

      • I counted and I've been on the list for 8 weeks (since May 12th). Either Concept2 screwed up, or the user on whirlpool is only taking a guess at how long they were on the list for and may have actually been on longer than 8 weeks.

        • yup… probably the user only taking a guess by the look of the comment. I signed up on June 14th, hope you get an update on upcoming week.

@glashalful: Got to the top of the queue today and ordered my rower. They give you 48 hours to order it once you receive the link, so if people don't purchase it straight away, then that would cause even more delays. Hopefully it won't take you too long until you can buy it.

        • as someone who only joined the wait list this week, Iā€™m now incredibly depressed.

          • @dirkgonnadirk: I can feel you… but keep an eye on gumtree in the meantime. Surely some fraction of these newly shipped rowers would end up there. šŸ˜‰

  • I have used both at the gym and I prefer the concept 2. I am on the waiting list for the concept 2 rower since a week ago. Hopefully I don't have to wait too long.

    • I saw in whirlpool forum someone got their rower being in 5 weeks on the list. But U.S website suggests wait time is like 8 weeks. Hope we get it sooner rather than later. Buying second hand at this point it simply not worth it.

  • Are you worried you will get bored of it? I can imagine it could get dull after an extended period of using it? Or are you just mainly doing the daily 2000m?

    • I don't find indoor rowing as a particularly interesting activity in the first place, so not worried about getting bored. Yes I hope to do daily 2k at minimum.

  • I'm also looking to buy it. Just got on the waiting list.

  • If anyone is looking for a WaterRower A1, Rebel Sport have them on "sale" for members at $1149. They're largely sold out everywhere though, and have been taken off the site. If you're keen and there's a quiet store nearby that's also out of the way, give them a ring. Of all the stores in my area, 1 had stock, and only had 1 at that.
