Used Dual Cab 3.5 Tonne Towing Capacity

Looking to upgrade my current dual cab. I have a 2009 holden colorado, 4X2 petrol. The thing is thirsty and only tows 2.5 tonne.
Looking for something diesel, 4X4, and prefably that can tow 3.5 tonne. Don't have the finance's to buy new.

Thanks.

  • Just for the sake of pointing out the obvious… For towing 3.5t, you'll need a light truck license or something like that (at least here in SA), so I'd have thought you might struggle to find a 4x4 rated to that.

Of course I could also be well mistaken.

You are, at least in WA you are

Dangit, right you are… 4.5 is the magic number. Sorry y'all 😑

So… what sort of budget are we working to? And manual or automatic or don't care?

You're also aware of the restrictions in terms of payload when towing on the brink like that? Don't expect 5 people in the ute, steel bull bar, and a bunch of crap in the tray when towing 3.5T, it won't happen.

You have to shoot down unicorn riding dreams don't you. Entertain the thought for once.

  • Budget?

  • I've got a 2016 RG Colorado 4x4 dual cab with 6 speed automatic. I get 10.3l/100km mixed hwy and city driving and it is legal to tow 3500kg. It's been a great truck for me. Got a custom canopy/camper on the back, pulls a caravan or a boat well and has anti sway trailer control electronics.

      legal to tow 3500kg

Provided the car + trailer doesn't exceed the GCM, yes
Kerb weight - 1933kg, GCM - 6,000kg. If towing the full 3.5T that leaves you 567kg payload. 350kg downball leaves you 217kg payload, including your canopy…

      • I personally would never tow 3.5T with it. I've got an F350 for that sort of weight. My caravan only has a GVM of 1840Kg so I always stay well below the GCM even with passengers, a bullbar and a canopy. You are right to bring attention to this though - John Cadogan does a pretty good youtube rant on it.

  • How many dollarydoos? Dmax is better than Colorado. What is it you are towing, and what does it weigh?

Just because something has a 3.5 tonne "capacity" didn't mean it's fun to tow 3.5 tonne with it.

That's pretty much what I was thinking. Just because you can doesn't make it a good idea.

I CAN drink beer, wine and spirits all in the one night but judging by the immovable stains on the white rug it's not a good idea.

  • What is the budget?

    Dmax has a good reputation.

As others have said: Be careful with ‘tow 3.5t’. By the time you work out the combined mass GCM, ball weight, payload and accessories fitted to the vehicle you probably won’t be able to actually tow 3500kg.

Towing something heavier than the tug isn’t ideal either.
