Green Screen for a Beginner

Hi All!
My son has requested a green screen for his birthday, assuming for making lame youtube videos…
Any suggestions for something reasonably priced but half decent?
Cheers

green coloured bedsheets from spotlight should do the trick. https://www.nyfa.edu/student-resources/how-to-create-a-green…

you need good, even lighting though, having bright and dark spots makes Chroma keying more difficult.

It can be any colour. If you have a large wall of any consistent colour then you can use that. It's all software driven. You just need to nominate the colour.

Not many people wear bright green or have acid green eyes or skin so that's why green is used.

    • It cannot be any colour without having keying issues everywhere, bright green and blue are specifically chosen because they don't usually appear indoors or in human skins or eyes.

  • They're only 'lame' until he makes a killing form them!

  • Just wait til ya boi starts making mad bank and you have to find ingenious ways to siphon his hard earned dollars

    • bill the kid for green screen consulting services

  • Support your son.
Who knows he may be the next youtube sensation.

if OP's son is thinking of making 'reaction' videos or pranks videos, these clips ARE lame

          • @payton: As are unboxing etc.

            • @brendanm: They may be lame, but there is an audience for them. There are a lot of people getting paid for doing lame stuff

I have been using a green screen for work zoom calls. I use a bright green fabric sheeting tacked up on the wall behind me. Something like this (fabric sheeting or an actual sheet) is probably your best option for cost. https://www.spotlightstores.com/by-the-metre/plain-top-pop-1…

As long as it's flat, crease-free and evenly lit, it will work as software does the lifting here, not the actual green sheet.

What have you got to hide? 🤔

Or are you using the distracted boyfriend background? https://ozzyman.com/this-journo-used-a-meme-background-for-a…

      • The truth is far less exciting. I'm just hiding the ugly garage wall behind me with interesting backgrounds. If you use a green screen then your hands etc. don't disappear as you move them around.

  • Not sure about their quality but plenty of inexpensive green screens available on eBay

    • Yep all over ebay. Look for one of the 'wrinkle-resistant' ones. The wrinkles/creases reflect the light differently and make it harder to get the chroma keying right in post-production.

As someone above already noted even lighting of the screen without shadows is pretty important to getting a good result. Cheap studio lights are all over ebay too.

  • I use the Neewer Muslin backdrops available on Amazon/eBay. They come folded, so ironing the creases out at the beginning is a bit of work but then he's set. You can hang it up on a curtain pole, or a dedicated T-shape stand, such as https://www.amazon.com.au/Neewer-Adjustable-Mini-Light-Stand… for more flexibility. But you'll also need clamps to keep it flat. And, as others have mentioned, at least one cheap studio light.
