Suggestion for upgrade over Samsung Galaxy S9+ (<$600)

As my title suggested,

My s9+ is on the way out I feel. Cracked screen, dont use the edge function, slowing down, and need to charge mid day already…

I am kinda a heavy mobile user.

Would anyone know a good upgrade phone around 600 dollar mark?

NFC for visa payment and Sd card slot I would prefer to have .

Or I should just fix the screen first and keep using it for another year?

  • Oh, I'd like to what is being suggested as well. I have a samsung s7 which I need to charge twice a day from medium usage (browsing & youtube). I was thinking Huawei P30 or Mi Mix3, but I am not sure.

Fix the screen and keep using. I doubt you will get a better phone for under $600. Also if you fix the screen through Samsung I believe it includes a battery replacement as well, remember reading that a while ago.

I'd probably fix the screen and spend that $600 in a year or two's time on a newer model phone than what you'd get today for that price

Replacing the screen that isn't dodgy and replacing the old battery would be about $150+ ish.

My recommendations from my own experience and getting phones for my folks:

    • Samsung Galaxy A51 (big screen, micro SD, NFC, battery is ok)

    • You could prob get a good deal for the Samsung Galaxy s10 Plus if you shop around for around $600-700

    • Google Pixel 3A XL (excellent battery, best in class camera, 6" screen, no micro SD though n design is a bit older (dem BEZELS and processor, headphone jack, good speakers, guaranteed google support for 2-3 years ish) - if u shop around u can get good deals, got one pretty much brand new with receipt for about $390 ish as an upgrade for my old man

    • Oppo Reno x10 Zoom (bezel-less screen, decent camera array, large screen, micro sd, nfc etc) - around the $600 brand new

    • or you can get some good deals from the Chinese brands like Xiaomi and Realme etc. BUT also consider that these have bad resale values as the Chinese brands pump out mass amounts of phones every year. I would AVOID Huawei for now if you can't live without Google Services, they make awesome products but unfortunately the USA trade war with China effected them really badly. If you want Google Services with Huawei still the Huawei P30 PRO is an excellent choice and one of my fav phones.

    • Apple iphones…. if your game :-) Good resale values and Apple support their devices for AGES VS the sea of Android.

    Hope these help! Happy hunting!

  • Yeah. the s9+ is still doing pretty well for a 2 year old phone, my one's sitting on ~2,500ma out of the original 3,500ma capacity and lasts about 4-5 hours screen on time. I would think about getting a new battery, but don't really want to compromise the water resistance.

I'll wait till the next generation iphones i think.

    • Which app do you use to test that

  • I'd get a new phone since it's multiple issues rather than one. Mid range phones are perfectly acceptable nowadays.
Samsung A51 ticks most of your boxes. I think OW has it for $539 but the site isn't working for me.

I'd avoid a phone with curved edges as getting screen protectors is a pain. For my current phone I'm trying to only charge to 80% max to see if it extends the battery life.

And I don't trust 3rd party screen replacements… some can be really dodgy. The Curved screen trend should just curl up and die, can't stand it.

Agree. Have been through 2 screen replacements since having a curved screen. Never broken a phone before this, and both times were in a good case. The edges are just too vulnerable and next phone will not be a curved screen.

    • Screen protectors dont really work with curved screen I find.

Next one would be non curve fir me too

  • Is the Pixel 3A battery life significantly better than the 3?
I'm really getting frustrated with charging my 3 twice or more a day.
Enjoy the Pixel phones, but not battery life at all.

    • The regular 3A is ok, it is a rather small phone but the battery is good for the size, nothing amazing as you'd expect. However, the 3A XL that I got my old man is a battery champ since it uses a less demanding processor and screen.
