  • Pick one up from the local river, enjoy feeding it, will probably out live you.

    • Too hard for me.😅

Turtles (Also fish contrary to popular belief) require heaps of care and good habitat etc.

I recommend instead of asking on OzB, join an aussie Aquarium forum and ask for tips on how to get started there. It is a bit QLD specific but i like https://www.qldaf.com/

    • Fish or reptile?!

      Thank you for the info.

As a wildlife rescuer I wouldn't recommend it. You will need a need a Reptile licence from NPWS.

Most 'pet' turtles eventually are dumped in a local creek after a couple of year and will not survive.

Better of buying you kids goldfish.

    • Thanks, will do more research before buy!

Great advice, and after reading your link I am now worn out! But seriously it just reiterates that its not really an ideal kids pet, unless someone in the family is seriously into reptiles etc and is willing to spend the time and effort properly maintaining it's enclosure and feeding it correctly.
      Ps: username checks out.

Yes don’t buy a turtle. I have seen that happen to Pet turtles. They live for so long it’s not a good beginners pet.

As mentioned above you need a license, and if you don’t care for turtles properly they smell really bad.

    • Thanks!

  • Maybe a hermit crab?

    Or a pot plant

    • Second this! Great suggestions! Hermit crabs are quite fun and a fruiting potted plant like a lemon tree is nice too

Turtle care is full-on. Many more potential husbandry pitfalls than fish. Native turtles also grow surprisingly large with 30cm+ shells and will outgrow most indoor aquariums. They're a poor first pet for children.

Don't! Take it from someone who experienced it.

I know it sounds fun and exciting for the first few days/weeks… it does grow old.

Long story: We found a long-necked baby turtle wondering on our driveway. It was so cute, so decided hey why not… picked up an aquarium/enclosure for around $1k (with all the lighting and whatever else it needed).
It is a nightmare to maintain, Dribble (our little pet), would hardly eat the food we got him, had to be refrigerated… and you had to be on the ball to maintain him and his aquarium (correct temp/water & ph levels). After about 2 months, poor Dribble died… dunno why but probably because we went OS and tasked my sis with looking after it. I think maybe overfed or to be fair, the water wasn't cleaned and PH levels were not adequate?
I still have the aquarium with all the stuff sitting around and will give it to a good home if needed (sadly you're in Syd) … but it is A LOT OF EFFORT!

Good luck if you proceed with my words of caution.

  • Had a turtle when i was a kid, its not a very exciting or interesting pet (was what i thought at the time). 10/10 would not get. The frog eggs i picked up from the drain were more exciting as I watched it hatch and turn into a baby frog. Get frog eggs instead haha

  • A turtle was the best pet I ever had.

It turned up in my backyard one day, confused the dog, stayed about a year just chilling out before buggering off to presumably where ever it had come from.

You may say random wild animals that you pretty much ignore don't count as pets, but anyway.

We have a turtle.. a murry river turtle.

We've had it for 15 years now it was the size of a 20 cent piece and now it's about 20 cm diameter

It lives in a 4 foot fish tank with a filter and heater.

It eats pellet food and we feed it water melon cucumber and lettuce.

It's not an engaging pet, like fish you just look at it.

Kids can't really care for it as the claws are sharp and will likely scratch if you try and pick it up.

    Maintenance is low.
So long that you keep the water clean and vacuum up any waste it produces. Which is a lot.

The tank is simple. With large stones and a raised platform the turtle is likely to rip up plants and destroy any attempt to decorate it's home.

We like our turtle. We have had 3 but 2 others grew really quick and we took them to the wildlife park.

    • care to elaborate neggers

    • Thank you for the information.By any chance you show me how you tank please?

  • all I can say is make sure your kids take good care of him. we had a turtle and my youngest cooked him in the microwave. exploded everywhere ruined me Samsung microwave the missus was absolutely fuming.

    • Lol. Nice first post.

    • Omg lol!

  • I recently read that prices for turtle have now been raised and it is better to wait a bit before buying. My kids also want a turtle, but I never dare to buy it for them.

    • I went to Kellyview pets last week, little turtle is price from $180 to $200 each!

      • If you're based in VIC then I'll give you my 3ft reptile aquarium (it was also brought for a turtle) + all misc items which cost about $1000. It was most recently used as a fish aquarium but up to you. Happy to give it all for a very reduced price (ie. $200) as its been sitting empty for the past year at least.

Sadly it doesn't come with a turtle (our baby one wandered up my driveway from my neighbour's pond hence the gear above)
